Today, we’re taking the wraps off of Android 7.1 Nougat, the latest version of the platform. You probably saw a sneak peek of it at last week’s event. It’s an incremental update based on Android 7.0 but includes new features for consumers and developers – from platform Daydream VR support and A/B system updates to app shortcuts and image keyboard support.
The first developer preview will hit later this month.
Eventually, when bought with a new device.
Note 7.1 ?
I thought Marshmallows were purposed to be burnt on the tip of a spike. Not Nougats.
And still only two years of updates for some lucky few Android phones. Thats simply not good enough. I don’t blame Google for the failings of others but they should at least be able to provide support for their nexus and android one devices as long as the fruity competition does – which is double as long.
You speak perfect sense. Sadly this is not part of the Android world and was one of the main reasons I became a traitor and moved to Apple a couple of years ago.
IMHO, the Apple model of updating (my iPhone 5S runs iOS 10) should be what Google/Alphabet and others are aiming at but they are not. I’d love to know why.
Because new phones every two years == >money + <effort?
How do you say that? The iPhone 5S is more than two years old.
If you mean the length of a Telco contract then ok but there are lots of us who don’t use these things.
We buy our phones from Apple (or in my case a 2nd hand shop) and use simple phone contracts. mine is £11.65/month (around $15US inc tax) for 600mins/600texts/1Gb data. There is no lock-in either as it is a one month rolling deal.
Not from your perspective. From the OEMs point of view, it’s bigger money to make a new phone every two years rather than spend the effort and time needed to update older ones. I don’t use carrier contracts either. I bought my iPhone directly from Apple and got my SIM card separately. However, so many people do use contracts and subsidized phones that there is bigger money for less effort in just pushing out a new phone. The profit rush is greater.
The way I see it, Apple is smart enough to go for the long term. Satisfied customers for more years means more customers are likely to come back. Companies like Samsung, LG, etc always give me the impression that their phone divisions do the equivalent of living from check to check, with each big check every year.
In the UK
Google £800+ 2 years
Apple £700+ 5 years
That’s .. £400 pa vs £140 per annum
Pretty stark figures for Apple
