This is an update release targetting bug fixes and new optimizations. It does not change the functionality of original 1.4.1 release. Check out the release notes and/or download new Java VM. In a related note, the Java porting team at beunited.org reports that they have reached a significant milestone. The java and javac programs are now building under BeOS.
I can’t wait to see that happening! I never wanted to learn C++ and if I can use my (limited) knowledge of Java in BeOS I’ll be in programming heaven. Way to go BeOS!
I don’t want to disturb your [/i]euphoria[/i] there, but i need to warn you that programming in java is pretty much the same on any operating system.
This may not be that big of a release to some but it fixes a very nasty bug that blue screened windows systems using ATI graphic cards. Its a weird bug, it only occured when closing the java programs otherwise they ran fine.
I’m glad to see the BeOS porting and Sun are still working on the Java port.
Java allowed me to go from Windows to Linux to FreeBSD with all the Java apps I like/make with no problems. I am sure this will only help BeOS gain more apps and programmers
My _euphoria_ is not about programming in BeOS as much as using my programs in BeOS. The programming side of things was one stumbling block in using BeOS daily. I could still write the programs in JBuilder/Eclipse/etc. in other Linux/WinXX and then run it in BeOS. That would be sweet!
Congrats to Simons team on that..
I too am awaiting same, but I also have long had the options under W2K or Mac and am more than familiar with +-s of Java. Since I am still using BeOS 90% I really wouldn’t mind having a x platform gui otion too. I still regard Java as a way to build proto SW quickly when I am not so worried about speed & BeOS never really had any alternatives to learning the B classes.
So could SWT & Eclipse be a possibility here? I would guess that wouldn’t happen for quite awhile.

This is actually a bug in the ATI driver, not in Java. Downloading the latest ATI driver also fixes the problem. But having a workaround in _02 is nice too
Thanks, Eugenia !
Just as I started to ignore OSNews I found it useful again.
Can’t get it yet on beunited but I can wait a bit longer.
Who cares? It works, and people still enjoy using it. To each their own. Or do you take pleasure in just trolling people?
“Downloading the latest ATI driver” is not always a possibility. ATI doesn’t provide directly drivers for notebooks, you have to wait for your vendor.
Could there be some indication of the progress they are making in the port of the AWT and Swing ? Having Java and JavaC to compile is great, but what can be compiled at the moment ?
Java on Beos finally. Hopefully guys will back it up well.
i just ibnstalled java on my system, using mozilla as main browser and it’s just working f=great. Java load faster…. you need to probe it.
i was talking about JRE
