Facebook Messenger has started rolling out Secret Conversations, a feature that enables end to end encryption for conversations within Messenger. Secret Conversations is built on Signal Protocol, a modern, open source, strong encryption protocol we developed for asynchronous messaging systems.
Signal Protocol powers our own private messaging app, Signal. The protocol is designed from the ground up to make seamless end-to-end encrypted messaging possible and to make private communication simple. To amplify the impact and scope of private communication, we also collaborate with other popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Google Allo, and now Facebook Messenger to help integrate Signal Protocol into those products.
These are all good steps forward, trail-blazed by – at least among the big companies – Apple.
Does anybody know how to turn this on? (I use messenger.com most of the time).
That’s nice… until you find out it’s been compromised since the beginning. But there’s your Koolaid so drink up anyway!
If you want to have a private conversation, do it in person, behind closed doors, at the volume of a whisper. Even then you’re at risk thanks to the cool futuristic spy technology that exists.. But, at least it’s far more private than anything you do electronically.
When you divulge those secrets don’t forget to have the Radio on playing some very loud music just in case the spooks are listening via the microphone on your Phone/tablet/Laptop etc.
anyone for a sign language course?
No good. They have cameras too. Crap, we’re in trouble.
shotsman/darknexus, the funny thing about what you guys said is that it’s true.
People ignorantly disregard this subject because they think it’s discussed in regards to them personally. `Yeah.. The govt is spying on _me_….. right, yeah ok.` It’s not about the govt spying on some insignificant individual, which describes 99% of us. It’s not about if a person has `anything to hide`. The issue is the mass surveillance of the entire population. The issue is the total disregard of the 4th amendment. Only a fool or someone perfectly happy being a sheep has no problem with this.
We don’t practice what we preach. We don’t live the ideals we try to force on everyone else. How ironic other countries are now issuing travel advisories to people coming here, that they should use extreme caution in any dealing with the police. That provoking the police in any way may result in death.
Yeah, that was kind of the idea why I said it. It’s not funny in the slightest. The problem is that I see no way to stop it. Naive suggestions like “write to your representative” will get you laughed at at best, and on the watch list at worst. What disgusts me is that people refuse to see what we are becoming. The signs are there. This is not new. The only difference this time is technology.
Tired this time. It’s not a message to technologists, the less to scientists’ minds. They’re like priests. Really not talking to Us.

Well, I guess they could be doing the right thing in theory/practise.
