Today, we’re pleased to begin the roll-out of Windows 10 Mobile to select Windows Phone 8.1 devices. There are a lot of great new features in Windows 10 Mobile, like Continuum, Windows Hello and Cortana.
The current list is restricted to a subset of Lumia devices, and it seems like the first generation of Windows Phone 8.x devices – such as my HTX 8X – won’t be getting the Windows 10 update. Microsoft will also disable insider builds for these first generation devices.
Each and every build asked for feedback on a number of things including responsiveness of the device. I guess the HTC 8x and other gen1 got a score below their threshold
Just for reference the the HTX 8X came out in 2012 and the Android version of the phone released the same year HTC One X was released with Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC Sense 4 (upgradable to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with HTC Sense 5).
So if you were the Android side of the fence, with this hardware, you would have been left behind Long ago.
I have a Nokia 1020 which is great camera phone, currently running Win 10 Insider Preview perfectly adequately – occasionally a bit unresponsive, but fine in most conditions. I note that it is not on the support list, even though at the time I purchased it, MS were guaranteeing it would be supported.
Hopefully, it will be on a second phase of rollout, otherwise, as that will be the second Windows phone I’ve had that failed to receive the next O/S version, I’m kind of disinclined to get burnt a third time.
Get a Lumia 640. They are great phones and you can buy them new on ebay for $30. I’ve been running the preview Win10M and it works great.

Unfortunately my 3 year old Samsung Ativ S isn’t upgraded. End of the line for Windows Phone for me.
I just ordered a Xiaomi and will be back in the Android ranks, slightly against my will but Windows Phone 10 is flogging a dead horse.
So… you hate not getting updates, and you go back to Android? Lol.
And that’s one of the reasons I’m really looking forward to an Ubuntu Tablet. For all its drawbacks, and I’m sure there will be a number of them, I can look forward to consistent upgrades and at least an effort toward improvement. Will never buy another Samsung if I can help it. And without a MicroSD card slot, Apple’s tablets have never interested me (among other reasons). But this is a little off topic…
Because Ubuntu upgrades have always had such an amazing success rate? I’ve had more problems with things breaking with Ubuntu upgrades than I ever did with other distributions. Even a manually upgraded Slackware performed more consistently afterward.
So are you now talking about system upgrades or security updates?
However, both have worked perfectly on my Ubuntu phone. Technically Ubuntu Touch system upgrades don’t work the same way they work on your desktop.

Well, I haven’t received a system update in almost a year yes. Only application that keep ticking over with upgrades are Plex, Telegram and Whatsapp.
I am on Windows 8.1 but for instance Here Maps just announced they won’t support WP 10 anymore. There are also an increasing number of nice to have apps that exist on Android and IOS but not on WP10.
I would love to go to Ubuntu phone but 300 euro for an experiment is too much
Join the Window 10 Insider programme and you will get regular updates.
I am actually enlisted, seems since a year only Lumia phones get updates.
Yes. Only Lumia phones get updated.
This sounds so very familiar, somehow… I keep hearing the word “Nexus” in my head…
Hadn’t tried the previews, so was a little apprehensive despite it being an official update. Having used Windows 10 for some time I do recognize aspects of it on the phone. Doesn’t seem much different from before, but I’ve noticed that I don’t like the Groove UI as much as I did the XBox Music one.
What with the universal app concept I need to start building something that I can run on my desktop, phone, and Surface.
