Anyway, as I was reading the news of the Nokia tablet, a thought hit me – maybe it’s time for Nokia and Jolla to kiss and make up. When you think about it, it makes sense. First of all, Jolla employees are used to seeing “Nokia” on their paychecks. Sure they took some time off, but at least they were being productive with their time.
It’s not going to happen. Jolla somewhat works exactly because they’re independent and small, and if Nokia is ever going to get back into phones, it’ll be Android.
I had that idea the day that Nokia sold its windows phone division to MS.
It makes stupid sense. Its gotta be really attractive to everyone involved except those who care about losing money. So will money or nostalgia win? I believe Jolla was even funded by Nokia start up funds. If so, it could be pitched as “saving their investment” by bringing it in house.
I was also kind of expecting the last big nokia announcement to be that they were bringing jolla home, as jolla was also hyping an announcement.
For most that I would love this to work, since I was a big fan of Nokia up until Elop came into scene, I do not think it would happen or it would be successful.
Nokia has a tradition of bogging down its own projects, just look at the previous failed attempts with Maemo/Meego/etc. Nokia simply bought Symbian and controlled so much that strangled the participation of other companies.
Either the company culture changed a lot or they will still kill by over management whatever they get.
Having said that, it would be awesome to have Nokia do a phoenix.
The is a huge hole in the phone market now. Nobody has made a modern feature phone.
Smart phones are good mini tablets, but poor phones. I believe we will see feature phones with physical buttons and perhaps T9 but with a user experience more like Android Wear.
Is a custom OS like sailfish needed or can Wear be tweaked? I don’t know. But expect more phones from Nokia.
Jolla could be seen as a way of keeping know how in Finland during the non compete period where they are not allowed to make phones.
Nokia can make phones, just not smartphones.
And Jolla is quite the opposite of a dumbphone or even feature phone OS.
They are out there, but they seem to reach very specialized markets.
Nokia is also small, having sold its mobile division to Microsoft!
I agree, it is not going to happen.
Nokia small? Maybe compared to Apple/Google/Microsoft/Samsung but they are still a multibillion dollar company
I mostly agree with you but if they want thw Playstore and Google services they will have to vive preference to Google Maps over Nokia Maps. I believe this was one of the reason they didn’t choose Android. Otherwise they will have to follow the Nokia X route and that isn’t a great option.
…for Nokia and Jolla to reunite. Under the agreement with Microsoft, Nokia may not sell any phones for two years, i.e. until Q4 2016. If they buy Jolla now, that would immediately kill the Jolla phone. They could only sell tablets for two years.
So, if they really want to buy Jolla and return to the phone business (and Nokia have publicly said they have no plans to do that), the right time would be in two years.
Nokia should get lost. Their latest patent trolling against VP8 and the past moronic management of Meego should teach everyone a lesson.
I’m sure Jolla folks have no interest to step in the same trap.
