Canonical has just signed its first deal to supply a smartphone with its mobile operating system, Canonical founder and product strategy leader Mark Shuttleworth revealed in an interview here at the LeWeb conference. He wouldn’t say which company has agreed to use the Linux-based OS, but said it will be offered on high-end phones in 2014.
Good news.
I know it’s offtopic, but is Shuttleworth trying to look like Stallman instead of Ive now?
The header picture was just too startling.
I thought of Infinite’s Comstock…
I know Canonical has been touting this as a true Linux-on-a-phone. Does this mean I’ll be able to run KDE Plasma Active on it?
Ooh I hope so.
Or you could try to get a Jolla phone and use a full linux software stack and Qt-based apps.
Ubuntu is in the process of switching Unity over to Qt for 2014. So basically all Linux based phones are going to be running Qt apps.
What apps are really there?
Not a lot actually; but the number of native apps should be growing.
Anyway, it comes with an Android VM built-in, so you can run Android apps on it too.
Well the whole KDE on ubuntu thing is going to be kind of a mess for a while.
KDE isn’t going to support Ubuntu’s Mir ( a replacement for x server). So you’d need Xmir ( the backwards compatible solution) on the phone. That might introduce more latentcy and strange bugs unique to the platform.
If the phone’s boot loader is unlocked, I guess you could install mer/sailfish on it and from that plasma active.
I share your desire for a plasma active style phone, not sure when it will be feasible and on which hardware.
I think they going to release the unity version
How does this relate to the kickstarter of the ubuntu phone?
Well, they missed their target for funding, so they didn’t proceed with that device. Maybe its the basis for whatever device they are brewing up with the unnamed partner. The partner could just be bringing ubuntu to an existing design, similar to what ZTE did with firefox phone.
I’m really rooting for Ubuntu to pull off their plans. I’d love to move to an Ubuntu phone. If they can ever pull off Shuttleworth’s vision, I believe all of the naysayers of Unity will say, “Oh. I get it.” Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a fan of Unity either. But, I believe it’s part of the big picture. So, I tolerate it. For years now, Shuttleworth seems to make decisions that frustrate end users. It would be awesome to see it all pay off in the near future.
It only pays off if it doesn’t frustrate end users…
If they ever reach OS nirvana, the frustration will have been worth it.
If only Ubuntu Mobile were a bit more stable/usable at this point.

Shuttleworth said, “We make no claims for Android compatibility, but we make it super easy for you to target both at the same time and super cool for you to do soâ€.
