“We had a lot of internal discussion on this, and have concluded that it’s more Android than ChromeOS. To be specific, it’s actually a modified Google TV release, but with all of the Bionic/Dalvik stripped out and replaced with a single binary for Chromecast. Since the Marvell DE3005 SOC running this is a single core variant of the 88DE3100, most of the Google TV code was reused. So, although it’s not going to let you install an APK or anything, its origins: the bootloader, kernel, init scripts, binaries, are all from the Google TV.” This thing just keeps getting more awesome.
Title repeat…

Cool to know, but I doubt with such a slow dedicated chip it will be able to do much more than streaming. For $35 for me it was a no brainer. I’ve been looking for a way to stream video to my TV, but waiting for the right time. This should work well. I’ve always got a device with Chrome handy.
Hopefully it works with Linux. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow.
It’s not because it is cheap it is weak…

For trying (and failing) to compete with Asian 35$ Android TV makers. While you would have expected this from Google 5 years ago, today it’s overpriced, has horrible specs and is simply not competitive.
The end user still benefits greatly from buying, say, an MK802-III for the same price.
Google, just stop. Stop making products only to have them pulled later. Stop making products that don’t compete in the market. Stop being Google.
It didn’t seem overpriced to most people based on initial consumer reception.
35$ for a Chrome window is overpriced, regardless of how you spin it. The people “accepted” that price tag because they don’t know better and Google are good at PR, where those Asian Android-TV are only on Ebay, they don’t get prime time coverage or re-blogged a million times.
The fact is, compare the specs to any full Android TV device and even the worse ones beat the Chromecast specs.
Also why isn’t this Miracast? Because another money grab soon.
Samsung are busy building an “Android of TVs” and SmartTV are selling out here in Spain and the country is in a massive recession.
I dunno how relevant this will be once Samsung are making most of the phone and most of the TVs and are now having their own dev conferences.
