Still not there yet, with Gnome 3.8, you STILL need to install a 3rd party program (tweak tool) to do something as ridiculously simple as changing screen fonts. And even that can’t do something as simple as changing window colors, which I could do with the windows 2.x control panel.
What is so damned hard about letting users pick their own damned colors???
As far as I know, the reasoning is that the current theme controls all the aesthetics, including colors and fonts. This is supposed to give you a coherent visual experience. I still thinks it’s bollocks, but that’s the explanation. On the other hand, themes are really easy to tweak. Still, it’s bollocks.
From what I have read in mailing list threads, the Gnome team want to ensure that when someone looks at your desktop, they know its Gnome. So they don’t want you mucking with the defaults and changing how it looks. A reason why you basically can’t change the top black bar.
Without a simple working sollution like the pixbuf engine for gtk2 all themes for gnome will keep looking like shite. Flat, dull and css crapness.
In the mailing list you can read why, they want to kill off all 3d party additions to the gnome desktop.
…only idiots will want to use it. Gnome is a creation of its developers for its developers and users be damned. Enough said.
…only idiots will want to use it
Well, in your world Linus Torvals is an idiot then, cause he when back to GNOME.
http://www.zdnet.com/linus-torvalds-switches-back-to-gnome-3-x-desk…
The article is just plain wrong and you would realize that if you actually read Torvalds responses, also the writer used old sources which in itself disqualifies the article. He tried it out, he did not like it…
Ask him today and he will say that he is using gnome as a main desktop.
There is a video from Finland where he is asked face to face what desktop he prefers, and he even explains why he do not use gnome. Search the mighty google or youtube and you shall find.
The article is just plain wrong
Nah, you are the blind one.

Too bad they didn’t decide on making it something other than what Teletubbies want to use…..
Isn’t that right La-La?
La-La:”La-La!!!”
Yes,another satisfied Gnome3 User….

Looking forward to the owncloud integration and a that’s about it this release.
Just ask everyone who got nailed by Sandy in one manner or another just how well owncloud integration can and will work in a real-world enviroment when one actually needs it.
What’s that,it doesn’t work?
Color me SHOCKED
What?
But man, I’m sick of all the Gnome 3 hatred. If you don’t like it, okay. If you have specific grievances, then fine. But the, “Gnome 3 is for idiots!” BS and such is stupid beyond belief. It doesn’t make you a l33t linux user. It makes you a tool.
I’m also a very happy KDE Plasma desktop and KDE software user and I couldn’t agree more with what you say. We need more solidarity and support among free/libre and open source software as we have actually have a big enemy to fight with and we will need to fight it together.
For the developers to include a classic mode, you can really call this a defeat for the core GNOEM developers… bow down to RED HAT. Stubborn to force on users the ‘revolutionary’ layout of GNOME? Guess who’s backing you up. They demand corporate solutions for seamless transitions.
That means the GNOME developers may not decide everything on corporate grounds after all, even with some of them working at RED HAT. Which is a good thing to think there are sane minds out there in RED HAT.
After Gnome 2.x Gnome are dead. How many 3.x versions they need to realize.
I’m asking me if -at least- all gnome 3.x team uses this bullshit.
Finally! Now we can start to fix all the broken themes and extensions YET AGAIN. Gnome project has made it very clear in several of their mailing list post that they wish to kill off 3d party themes and extension projects.
I like software freedom (and some may say freedom and libery in general) and i find gnome to be unfriendly to non-gnome developers in general when trying to add to stuff written by the gnome peeps. Their loss i guess as people leave for more friendly enviroments.
They went from being the most used desktop on *ix with gnome2 to almost obscurity with gnome3. I wish them nothing but the best, but why did they have to alienate EVERYONE from developers to end users. Even corporate entities are refusing gtk3 and gnome3. Not a good sign to come for the project.
