“Samsung, the world’s largest seller of mobile phones, said it will start selling smartphones this year featuring the Tizen operating system backed by Intel. ‘We plan to release new, competitive Tizen devices within this year and will keep expanding the lineup depending on market conditions’, Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung said in an e-mailed statement today. The company didn’t elaborate on model specifications, prices or timeframe for their debut.” The odds for Ubuntu on phones just got worse. Great news for competition, though.
Jolla/Sailfish will probably be first, then Tizen and then Ubuntu? Sounds like 2013 will be a breakthrough for mobile Linux. I wouldn’t call it “worse” – on the contrary. It should increase a list of Linux friendly devices.

And there will be the release of Firefox OS somewhere in 2013 as well (and then Ubuntu Mobile in 2014). And all three – Tizen, Sailfish and Firefox OS will be a lot more hacker-friendly than Android currently is. I hope that hardware providers will not lock down their devices.

OTOH I can imagine that so many choices will bring some confusion, so that average consumers will want to make sure their carrier is giving them an Android device…
Based on my experience in the telecommunications industry I am very septic any of these OS will win enough traction.
They wont, just as the N900 didn’t, but for many, it’s not the point. The N900 was the last hacker friendly superphone, the N9 was ok, but dead on arrival.
Now I’m being tempted to buy a phone just so I can play with these new toys!
HTML5 seems to be the new “lingua franca”.
