“The Chinese government issued new rules on Friday requiring Internet users to provide their real names to service providers, while assigning Internet companies greater responsibility for deleting forbidden postings and reporting them to the authorities.” The crazy thing is not that China is tightening its control over the internet. No, the crazy thing is that if it were up to our own politicians, western governments should do the same.
One of the biggest pulls I’ve seen towards third parties (particularly the Libertarian Party) by people my age and younger is the desire for control of the internet by both major parties. If the Democrats want to keep their hold on the youth vote, they’d best wise up and fast.
I find it ironic that some of the biggest protesters of “commie” values are the same ones pushing for greater censorship on the web.
But then I guess hypocrisy is hardly new thing for them.
But China also has very strong censorship law (ie Chinese citizens can’t enter youtube or facebook). I wonder if China is being pressured by the US and international organizations to do this?
I very much doubt that. China couldn’t give a rats arse about any recommendations the west tries to push on them.
Yeah… they’re too busy leeching jobs from people in the west and censoring their government from its own citizens to give a damn what western countries think.
We need alt_internet working on a mesh networking. This way it would be really hard to block people from using internet, internet could be cheap or free, you woulnd’t be required to give your data, etc.
We already have the hardware, although the open hardware would be much better that what we got today. FreedomBox is one of the best projects aiming into that.
China is protecting their leaders power. The west is trying to protect civilization. Only crooks in the west believe it is OK to steal over the internet.
