If a person used Linux once in their life they are gonna put that they use Linux. The map will obviously be highly off.
I say we follow up on the latitude/longitude and go to that persons house and see what they’re actually running. I guarantee 95% of them will be using Windows.
The List of operating systems they use is totally slanted to common *NIX varients. For me this makes the whole thing worthless. If they wanted to be fair then they would include AmigaOS and RiscOS which seems to be sold a lot in Europe. Maybe they are looking to get beat out by the “other” catagory.
I think the list should have main OS categories (Windows/Mac/Unix/Linux—>though does having the last two separate make sense?) Then each category could be sub-divided into other OS categories.
i am not unix biased just because i don’t know about those other os’s, i’ve added amigaos, riscos, os2 as well as nextstep and openstep, solaris.
the map is not yet there, to see how things would look like
have a look at the debian user worldmap (linked at the top of the page). now that over 500 people registered within one day i think i should make the map very soon, i thought about a map with all os’s on it, each os a different color. opinions?
On the topic of making things confused, why list a load of Linux variations? They’re still Linux, and you’d sooner run out of colours than listing them all.
debian is also the Hurd and a few BSD’s. besides it is different to any other linux distribution, unlike all distros it’s really free, as in freedom.
i don’t care about the others, but tell a mandrake user he should pick “i’m a linux user”… besides i’m curious what distro is used more, and on what geographic place.
should make it so users of the oses just show up as dots on the map, instead of their names, since you are already running out of space to see everyone
This is a pretty dumb idea.

… that it’s the RIAA trying to pinpoint some IP addresses? *snigger*
Just got an imagination that’s all

I don’t get it. I see “This map was made using…”, but I don’t see a map anywhere.
Mines not on the list. And I am definately not putting other. What good does other doo. It is very *nix centric!

Also, what about dual-boot users?
Well, I was just about to look up my latitude and longitude so I could register myself on the map, only to find there’s no Solaris option… a shame…

Yet another survey that has no chance of reflecting reality.
I see you have added OS/2 to the list of operating systems. However, the system I use in eComStation which, although based
on OS/2 is developed separately from the IBM system by Serenity
Systems, Inc. There are still many OS/2 users, but to be
precise, I think the eCS variant should also be listed just
like the various distros of Unix.
EComStation is based on OS/2, it runs your OS/2 apps. It’s OS/2. No need to make things more confused than they already are.
