One of the coolest 3D OpenGL games written for the Mac 8.x/9.x, WaterRace, is now GPL and it would be great if developers would port it to other platforms that support GL.
The reason its a stuffit file is because it was done on classic MacOS with all of those resource forks and such that get messed up when put into a .zip. But for those that want to peruse the code.
Can’t you guys see past the fact that you might be able to possibly port this 2 year old game to your platform of choice? This is great news not because this game is possibly more portable, but because it allows people to learn from the source code of a commercially available game. Any mac game programmer can now look at this code and get a good understanding of how mac game programming works and can use this code to help with their game. If they wanted to release a GPL game as well, they could even use the actual code! See the forest from the trees people, this is great news, but not because WaterRace might get a BeOS port. =P

is great … I own the mac version. I took Two years to be developed. If you like racing game then try it.

here : http://www.idevgames.com/content/download.php?id=420 it’s a stuff it archive, but they can be open on windows and ssome unix systems (see http://www.stuffit.com). It’s a 2.8 mb download.
It contains 223 files and folders and weights 8 MB.
You have infinty enfgine, common code and Water Race Final.
The code seems to be in pure C and very mac oreinted, so porting might be a chore (but I’ve only browsed 5 files, and very quickly).

Wow, you must have been a big baby. I feel sorry for your mother.
(Sorry, just kidding – I couldn’t help myself.)
four comments so far…does that mean that every Mac user has been represented?
I’d LOVE to see this game appear in Zeta. Maybe some / several clever BeOS coders could take a look at the code ?

nice, a Linux port of this game would be nice…..

I downloaded stuffit for linux but I get an error when trying to unstuff this:
WaterRace Source Code/French Touch Web Site.webloc
WaterRace Source Code/GPL License.txt ..
WaterRace Source Code/Infinity Engine / Infinity Project/.DS_Store ..
aterRace Source Code/Infinity Engine / Infinity Project/Icon
WaterRace Source Code/Infinity Engine / Infinity Project/Infinity Project.old.µ ..algorithm::arsenic::Decompressor exception: not a compressed stream
Anyone else having this problem. If not would someone be willing to recompress all these files in a real format (tar.bz2 or tar.gz) and post a link ?
Thanks

Who the hell has written that it’s an OpenGL game????
It’s based on Apple’s legacy RAVE API. I know, RAVE is fast, but it’s not even avaliable on MacOS X!
Check http://www.idevgames.com/
And it’s only the code right, not the graphics? So porting it to linux (from RAVE to OpenGL) wouldn’t give you something playable…
the web site for the game offers it for $29 …
That’s about $20 too much, IMO.
looks neat, but thirty clams? Please.

Enjoy.
port it to zeta!
I wonder if Quesa would help.
http://www.quesa.org/
It’s a LGPL’ed clone of Apple’s QuickDraw 3D library. Is RAVE based on, or related to, QuickDraw 3D at all?
Cool. it says Quesa runs on BeOS.
Port it to BeOSs! (Zeta)
