“Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other international leaders urged countries and private businesses on Thursday to fight increasing efforts to restrict access to the Internet by repressive governments and even some democratic ones. Opening a two-day conference on digital freedom here sponsored by Google and the Dutch government, Mrs. Clinton warned that restrictions on the Internet threatened not only basic freedoms and human rights, but also international commerce and the free flow of information that increasingly makes it possible.” Uhm, Mrs. Clinton… SOPA…?
I often post news like this on my Google+ feed but have to apologies to my American friends as it’s not directed at them. It never fails to amaze me the brazen hypocrisy and blatant arrogance of American “diplomacy”. Seriously, get your own house in order before you start bitching about others’. American has not been the poster child for freedom for a long time and the “do as I say, not as I do” message being sent out does nothing to endear American to the rest of the world. /rant
Americans(US type) – the most hypocritical nation on the planet of the earth. That includes practically everyone. That’s my personal observation. Though nothing essentially wrong with hypocrisy, as long as you know that you are hypocritical. /rant
No problem. Let’s start with our own country: SOPA anyone?
“Uhm, Mrs. Clinton… SOPA…?”
You mean, that piece of legislation which has been proposed in the House of Representatives? Part of the *legislative* branch? Over which the *executive* branch – of which Ms. Clinton is a part – has no control?
It is a good idea to get a vague grasp of how U.S. politics works before you start wading in with opinions.
True… to an extent. The House is also governed by the opposing party.
But the point still sticks. She’s advising the governments of other countries on what to do. It wouldn’t hurt if she also advocated it to a part of her own government. Of course, the House cares as much for her opinion as they care for a sharp stick in their eyes.
Has the Obama administration opposed SOPA?
No?
Case closed.
Is Clinton Obama?
No?
I’m not sure exactly how Clinton feels about SOPA. However there is a petition on Demand Progress regarding this:
http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/thank_clinton
So maybe there is some disagreement among the administration.
Mrs Clinton has no control over the legislation in any other country yet she feel like she should make her opinion heard. Is she doing the same about SOPA? No? Then your point is invalid.

I do not understand
American politics.
Can anyone tell me
why is this precisely
in Germany?
I know it is confusing, but “Dutch” is not “Deutsch”.
Dutch means something from the Netherlands (sometimes referred to as Holland).
Clinton spoke at a conference in the Netherlands, it wasn’t specifically about American politics.
If Mrs. Clinton continues to make remarks such as these she can expect a pretty heavy smear campaign in the near future.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce doesn’t take kindly to people endorsing anarchy and theft on the Internet. That’s what it is: theft! Piracy must be stopped, it funds drug abuse and human trafficing, even drive-by rapes! Haven’t you seen that propa…informational video?
Watch out Mrs. Clinton. Go back to the herd and do as you are told. Let the big boys handle the tubes.
For real? There’s a video that eludes to those connections? Heh. Bring on the reefer madness.

Enjoy!
Man, and I thought that child labour was legal if it’s about saving “only a few dollars” on freely available shoes and computers…
I should have known that DVD piracy is the main source.
If my understanding of American politics is correct, SOPA hasn’t moved to her branch of the legislature, yet, as such, it isn’t Hilary Clinton’s turn. Of course, even once it becomes an issue she can act on, the copyright thugs will probably abduct her family or something. Obama campaigned on a strong copyright reform platform, and won the youth vote through social media, but as soon as he was sworn in, he must have been given a talking to by the copyright lobby. The kind of talking to where bad things might hypotheitically happen. If anyone needs further proof of the insideous grip of copyright and other lobbies in the US, you just need to look at the stark contrast between Obama’s campaign, and his presidency. He even looks like a different person, now he’s president, as if all the life and the will to do right have been sucked out of him. His skin has a sickly grey cast to it, he speaks in a duller monotone, like when a child is told to apologise, there’s no longer any real vigor to his speeches.
