I understand the reason for compatibility, but if MS wants to continue to be relevant in the software business, they need to take a page from Apple and others, and leave some of those old children behind.
They need to cut the umbilical cord to all the old OS, browsers, etc. and build something new, from scratch, that will not work in the old software but it will be build with security in mind.
You people realized that it is backward compatibility the biggest problem hanging over the security of MS products.
It is time to do it and they should have started with Windows 8. I guess no one at MS has the vision or the balls to make that move. Ballmer has no vision. He might understand numbers but I believe he lacks the enthusiasm needed to run a company like MS.
You guys remember when the Apple board fired Jobs and got a guy from Pepsi co. to run the company and he ran it to the ground. It takes a special kind of person to run something like Apple, Microsoft, even Unbuntu. MS does not have that person on board right now and they better get one fast!
Intel have tried to compete with their own monopoly with IA-64. It failed. And we’ve had a glimpse of what Microsoft competing with their own monopoly would be when they released Windows Vista : as of today, Windows XP is still the dominant release of Windows.
You’re right that it’s what they *should* do. But the thing is, they simply can’t.
