The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE. This is the third release from the 8-STABLE branch which improves on the functionality of FreeBSD 8.1 and introduces some new features. For more information, see the 8.2-RELEASE announcement, and the 7.4-RELEASE announcement, ehch has also been released.
Hail to the king 🙂
Too bad FreeBSD 8.2 still use an ancient version of ZFS. I guess we’ll have to wait for 9.0 to be on par with OpenSolaris/OpenIndiana again.
The 8.2 is current stable release and it recieves mostly updates and fixes, the true battle ground for new features is 9-CURRENT branch, after 7.4/8.2 branches has been released, the FreeBSD development team will now focus on 9.0-RELEASE which should occur about May/June with all the latest ZFS v28 (with deduplication and so), and lots of other new and shiny features.
Also ZFS version on FreeBSD 8.2 is now v15, so we miss only these features (which deduplication may seem most caluable):
VER – DESCRIPTION
v16 – stmf property support
v17 – Triple-parity RAID-Z
v18 – Snapshot user holds
v19 – Log device removal
v20 – Compression using zle (zero-length encoding)
v21 – Deduplication
v22 – Received properties
Also, You can even now set up a 9-CURRENT FreeBSD with latext ZFS v28 and check how it works, check this:

Yeah, deduplication is the main feature I want, but also the encryption support in v30.
You can set up encryption already with GELI on FreeBSD 8.2 with ZFSwhich may be even more efficient since it uses hardware crypto FreeBSD framerowk and uses crypto hardware (like AES accelration in recent Intel CPUs).
… and even if You do not have hardware accelration for crypto, You can still use as many threads as You like for GELI.

That’s not bad, that’s quality compared to the quantity in Linux distros. This isn’t a major release and so there won’t be any major upgrades. Wait for 9.0 at the end of this year.
There are patches available for testing that enable ZFSv28 in 8-STABLE, as well as in 9-CURRENT.
The goal, hope, and dream is to have ZFSv28 ready for 8.3-RELEASE and 9.0-RELEASE.
