Opera has released Beta 2 of the new Opera 7. New features include the ability to import e-mails from Netscape versions 6/7, speed optimizations, a fifteen day banner free period and various other enhancements. Check out the changelog for a complete list of what’s new.
I downloaded the non-Java version and installed it over the Java-enabled beta 1. But, it’s now telling me Java isn’t installed.
Opera 7 tells me I have to buy it before I can get rid of the startup “continue where I was/ home page/no windows” screen.
That’s the first time they’ve broken functionality in their adware version.
Although I’m not getting any ads just yet.
The “windows” skin looks very nice! (no bells/whistles, no uniform blue) It’s nice that I can change the uniform colour, too (“view” menu).
I wonder how long this beta will last me; the previous one started up only once, after that it just crashed. I just hope that won’t happen now, I like it too much.
I only wonder what happened to the tabs: whenever I ask for a new page, I get a new window.
And finally it no longer looks gay. The “Windows” skin is great. And finally I have my context menu back when I right click on the text input box.
Unfortunately the following things are still broken:
* The side buttons on the mouse still don’t work. Although gestures accomplish the same task, it’d just be nice if they worked.
* Cycling child windows using right click + scroll wheel is still broken. I think this has something to do with them changing the look… by default in Windows it would pop up a list of windows when you did this. The option still exists in the preferences (under Windows) to Cycle pages: without showing list. However, like many of the previous options in Opera 7, it seems to have been rendered non-functional by the interface changes.
I’ve already noticed a number of bugs fixed, such as one which plagued text input boxes like… the comment entry box I’m typing into right now here on OSNews.
If you’re using Opera 7 beta 1, this release is worth it for the ability to change skins and load the “Windows” skin alone. Finally you can have Opera 7 without all the fruit.
I’ve attached a screen shot of Opera 7 with the “Windows” theme here, just in case you’re curious:
http://www.fails.org/opera7.png
if you have a connection which allows it, this browser is faster than anything else. Give it a try.
>And finally it no longer looks gay.
So now it looks boring, grey, dull, with no style, taste or class. And it can’t dance either… Unless of course it looks bisexual…
Homophobic idiot.
Homophobic idiot.
Yeah, whatever uppity Brit, try keeping up on your American slang.
Do not care if it looks gay, bisexual or whatever flavor comes these days but frankly why would anyone keep up with American slang… its only place it in /dev/null for the non-Americans.
And whoever says its not right:
I am still Bisexual, and having fun, and loving it. =)
You know, there is a slang out of America. Whenever something is incredibly cheezy, banal, or kitchy, people say it is sooooo “American”.
Maybe you also should keep up with non-American slang. ; )
Cheers!
c’mon now…everyone knows americans don’t keep up with anything not “american”…LOL
they really should though, and maybe then they’d have better beer! haha…
hehehe.. it’s funny because it’s true
A bigot is a bigot in whatever country. The moron who made the homophobic remark is a hater, and haters are sick people. It has nothing to do with American – as a matter of fact, it is highly UNAMERICAN. America is built on diversity. So Bascule, you sick twisted hater – do not DARE speak for all Americans – you are the scum among us… and I say that as a straight white male American. To everyone else, I say: do not take this scumbag as representative of most Americans.
sure, he made a stupid comment…but he didn’t mean it in an slanderous way.
other than calling it prior versions “gay” looking, the rest of his post was very good. don’t take an innocent comment and spin it into something which was not the intent.
it was an innocent comment, and I’m sure he has learned it.
Solaris version still at 5.someting beta, and Linux at 6.1
Guess I’ll stick with Mozilla.

You know, there are better forums for your P.C. propaganda than OSnews. I can see how my comment can be construted as passive-agressive gay bashing, but the lengths to which you’re taking it here are ludicrous. I’m not sure what emotions you’re trying to foster in people with your little tirade, but all that shows through your words is a blinding hatred.
As for the rest of you, I cense a certain level of culture shock. Well, it was about 4AM my time when I posted that and I had gotten up at 8AM that day… I was relatively sleep deprived and not fully considering the ramifications of how it would be received in an international forum, and for any who misconstrued its meaning I apologize. However I don’t feel myself deserving of the backlash this has created.
So to “Anonymous” and “stopdabombing” I say push out the jive and bring in the love.
me too. mozilla does it all for me, and I like the fact that it’s totally open source. i’ve always felt that opera was a little wonky, plus the email portion isn’t available for linux. if they were to put that in and offer a full substitute I’d certinaly be willing to try it again…provided they keep the 15 day ad free policy. each trial that i’ve done the ad bar drives me crazy…crazy enough to not purchase the product. i prefer a real test drive as to an aad sponsored one.
Amazing,… I’ll probably buy Opera,.. as soon as there is a BeOS / Linux Build available
You know, there are better forums for your P.C. propaganda than OSnews.
Yeah, if you supposedly care so much about what OSnews should be about, why don’t you take your own advice, and stick to the issues, instead of engaging in hate-speech. As to my post – until your disgusting comment, all my posts on OSnews dealt only with technical issues. So, it has nothing to do with PC propaganda. Don’t make hate-filled statements that don’t belong in a technical review. You started it, nobody asked for it. Stick to the issues – what OSnews is about, and try to refrain from injecting hate speech into these forums. It is not welcome. If you had any honor you’d apologize instead of attacking those who object to hate-speech YOU INITIATED. And your ridiculous excuses don’t wash – people were not culture-shocked, they were shocked at your bigotry, so don’t imply that somehow American culture is homophobic as a cover for your hate – as an American who grew up in American culture, I reject that. And now, unless you want to continue this, I’ll drop the issue.
and stop drinking too much caffeine.
yes, take a deep breath.
he didn’t mean it as hate speach…for cryin out loud…it was a very misinformed comment in our current polictically correct, but lets leave it at that…i’m sure he’s seen the error of his ways.
and his post WAS VERY GOOD, other than the one little word…which means “silly” looking or not very nice.
move on….
Actually, since Beta 1, you could change the colours. But they all look so ugly, the default blue looks best.
Gay not only means homosexual, but a number of other meanings. Amongst which:
1 a : happily excited : MERRY b : keenly alive and exuberant : having or inducing high spirits
2 a : BRIGHT, LIVELY <gay sunny meadows> b : brilliant in color
3 : given to social pleasures; also : LICENTIOUS
And it was all those meanings before the homosexuals hijacked the word.
[note: i’m not homophobic, albeit i live in a society that is]
stopdabombing: Actually, in the developed world, America has the least gay rights. Even Japan have more gay rights. So much for diversity. Besides, one of the great founding principles of America is freedom of speech, and bashing people that uses that right is entirely stupid (of course, freedom of speech don’t apply here, as this is a private venue, but may i add that this private venue is not a your property?)
Yeah, if you supposedly care so much about what OSnews should be about, why don’t you take your own advice
Actually, you have no idea what OSNews is about. Bascule is a regular. And today is th first time I met you. The number one rule on Usenet is that don’t pretend you are higher than a regular (i.e. being snobbish). I think that applies to you. He said sorry, he gave an explaination. Jeez…
On this forum, I heard quite a lot of christian/jesus bashing, never once have I, as a strong Christian, lash out like you.
I said I was ready to drop it, but since rajan wants to continue, I’ll just point out:
Besides, one of the great founding principles of America is freedom of speech, and bashing people that uses that right is entirely stupid
well rajan, fyi, that also means I have the right of free speech to strongly criticize people who engage in hate-speech. So there.
As to your citing of the definition of gay, clearly that is not how he used it – read his post again, unless you claim that he meant “it is no longer merry” LOL! So, that, rajan, was irrelevant.
Actually, you have no idea what OSNews is about.
And who are YOU to tell me this? I’ve been lurking on this site for a long time so you are not going to tell me that I have no idea what OSNews is about. It is not your place to tell me what *I* know about OSNews – I don’t make such claims about you, do I?
And today is th first time I met you. The number one rule on Usenet is that don’t pretend you are higher than a regular (i.e. being snobbish). I think that applies to you.
I have also submitted news to this site. And I have posted here before today. Whether you’ve “heard” of me or not is not my concern – of what relevance is that? I am not “pretending to be higher” than anyone – I’m expressing my opinion *if you don’t mind*. It is not for you to call me “snobbish”. It doesn’t matter who has been posting how long – content of the posts is what matters.
He said sorry, he gave an explaination. Jeez…
The explanation was lame claiming “culture shock” was the reason people objected – as if it is American culture to be homophobic – as an American I assure you it is not so, though like any country we have our haters. And his apology was to those who “misconstrued” his comments – sorry, but nobody misconstrued anything. You don’t call someone of a darker complexion a “n….”, and say, “but if you misconstrued, I’m sorry”. You apologize fair and square.
I am willing to accept until proven otherwise that he is not a bad person, and that comes from many posts not just one. So, I have an open mind about that. As such, I said, more than once, I’m willing to drop this, then you turn up. ‘Nuff said.
You CAN use the side buttons on mice such as the IntelliMouse Optical. Go into the mouse properties, choose to use program-specific assignments, and then choose ‘N’ for back and ‘N’ for forward.
I am using my right of freedom of speech, so do not bash me please: YOU ARE A STUPID AMERICAN! Hahahahaha!
take a pill everyone.
He did not mean that as an offensive comment.
Don’t take it that way.
Stop calling it hate-speech, becasue it’s not. Don’t take it that way.
His post was good, other than the use of that word, which you have obviously completely taken out of context.
You’re a troll…go away.
you’re dumb, man. come chill, and we’ll hit the gravity bong.
the only thing stopdabombing is going to do is baste your anus with his cheezy liberal enema! for he is far too concerned with what the rest of the world thinks about him, when “america is misrepresented.” this particular type of troll takes it upon himself to make sure the rest of the world knows he is living in this country against his will. oh yeah, abtar ibn al-fakir!
A bigot is a bigot in whatever country. The moron who made the homophobic remark is a hater, and haters are sick people. It has nothing to do with American – as a matter of fact, it is highly UNAMERICAN. America is built on diversity. yes, stopdabombing, we are the same nation that imprisoned all Japanese in America in internment camps during the whole of World War II. We are the same nation that made countless treaties with sovereign Native American tribes, and then broke them. We are the same nation who started a war with Mexico to get a little more land. We are the same nation who went to Hawaii and established planataions so that the American government could come ‘interevene’ when it was threatened. We are the same nation today, just waiting to fistfuck the next guy in line just so we can lower our bottom line and raise our profit margins. So are we founded on diversity? Yes. The question is, how creative can be be to extort out of the world what is rightfully someone else’s?
You are forgetting Vietnam, Hirosima, and maybe the worst: Microsoft.
This whole thing has gotten totally out of hand – this is not the place. A nasty OFF TOPIC remark was made. It was met with sharp criticism not just by me BUT BY MANY OTHERS (to those who think *I* am a troll who is the only one to find that remark extremely offensive and not belonging here). I’m willing to drop it, and run the risk of being thought of as “backing down”, even if I do not at all feel defeated by the counterarguments, otherwise this can just go on and on and on wasting bandwidth: examples – you don’t know my political orientation, so it is laughable to say “liberal”, as if it is only liberals who can be against bigotry or hate-speech. And yes, I love my country and don’t apologize for that – which is why rather than dwell on the mistakes of the past, I try to uphold a higher standard and confront those who want to identify with the worst. America is about going forward and not pulling backward. America at its best is a great country and a great force for good in the world, though sadly we also make mistakes.
And now, regardless of what anyone says, this is my last post on the subject. We’ve wasted enough space. You can have the last word.
Like you’ve mention about seventeen times before… aren’t you about to drop your hot-headed over-reaction to the use of the slang ‘gay’ which has come to mean so much more than one man buggering another? And as far as a liberal goes, yes, you are one, but a stupid one; you seem like a reactionary. Remember it is the Christian Right in America that hates fags, and rember, <a href=”http://godhatesfags.com“>http://godhatesfags.com too. And of you and your changing of an obvious attitudnal barrier in America is rediculous, we need marshall law right now to mandate your wishy-washy-ness. And I’m sorry for coming onto OSNews, which I have no business at, to comment at your over-reaction to my poor friend Bascule’s attempt at making a shorter post by using the term ‘gay’. You really do not get what it is to be American, and what it is to be a capitalist, do you?
This is the second time I have seen homophobic profanity in one of Bascule’s posts. I don’t really care what he has to say if he writes like a juvenile deliquent.
One of my best friends in high school was the school’s only openly gay student. Insults are not the only things that were flung at him, there were also good sized rocks. That may help to explain why in a school of 1400 students with an average of one homosexual in every 30 people only one was openly gay, and this was in a relatively liberal county (last presidential election more than 10% voted for Nader).
Sure this isn’t the proper forum for it, but it wasn’t the proper place for his first comment either.
I was mentioning acts perpetrated in America, or lands of America. It was not my intent at all to include the rest of the world, and I hope, from my illusion of in-depth knowledge of America’s actions within itself will give you a general feeling of my comprehension of what America has done abroad. oh yeah, i’d just like to add the word ‘gay’ into my post too. gay.
I don’t see how Bascule describing opera 7b2’s look as “gay” has anything at all to do with rocks being tossed at your (probably fictional) friend. I find it sad that you can be so easily manipulated by a single word, especially one that has several meanings.
“This is the second time I have seen homophobic profanity in one of Bascule’s posts.”
That’s a larf. I suppose saying something “sucks” is passively disparaging to any giver of fellatio, but you don’t see anyone sticking up for them. I don’t think “blowing things out of proportion” begins to describe this situation.

So you’re saying that calling the default look of a web browser “gay” is tantamount to throwing good sized rocks at your best friend. That isn’t blowing things out of proportion.
Seriously, the reaction by the P.C. thugs in the audience is nothing short of laughable. I’ve got news for you, the world isn’t P.C., and your innocent little eyes and ears are going to be soiled by a lot worse in times to come.
“I suppose saying something “sucks” is passively disparaging to any giver of fellatio, but you don’t see anyone sticking up for them.”
Thats because there is no group of people who are referred to as “sucks”, but there is group of people who are referred to as “American” and “gay”.
Look I can say the following: FUCKING. No one cares.
But now look what happens: Many elephants are FUCKING magicfecallator every day.
=)
So I will not be included to this beautiful Opera 7 beta 2 review started by Bascule, or craze the 50 years old photography critics and world famous photographers as I was doing all day after this moment. If you are interested, check out my photos and read how do a computer scientist fights with art circles starting from here: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=1180707
Opera 7 beta 2: Is fantastic.
– The wand password manager works like a dream.
– It is really even faster.
– The nasty bug resulting in locking of the text fields is gone.
– Windows skin is nice, especially because it has smaller buttons.
– The new panel called Links is really useful.
– The inability to continue surfing from the last time I used Opera is something that I must get along with for a short time, since I am planning to but Opera.
– Congrats Opera team. They succeeded in a very very very difficult thing. They manage to create a 3rd party browser, which is so better than all the others that, they are selling it, although the alternatives are free. And they are doing it on many platforms. Kudos! ; )
Cheers!
I am the photographer on that site, not the girl (Gokce). So, stop sending me love mails. Cheers.

“stopdabombing: Actually, in the developed world, America has the least gay rights. Even Japan have more gay rights.”
You’re kidding, right? In case you aren’t, let me set you straight (so to speak). America is a paradise for diversity compared to Japan. Even straight foreigners are blatantly discriminated against, and Japanese homosexuals live a double life much as they did in the U.S. decades ago. Maybe the laws specify rights (I don’t know that they do), but if so there’s no enforcement.
Back to the topic: I hope the new Opera beta crashes less than Opera 7, which crashes randomly several times a day on my box.

this beta is even faster than the last one. good job!
the only thing that bugged me was that “new page”(ctrl-n) gave me a new window, except for when I rightclicked the tab bar. I hope it’s not meant to be this way, I loved how you finally got that right in the previous beta so don’t mess it up

…If you do not know the laws, why did you bother to comment. Yes, I suppose you living in Japan gives you some sort of right to have an opinion on the subject. As for mentioning the discrimination of straight foreigners… well, about the only reason I can think of is that you’re a foreigner in Japan and you’re being discriminated against. But anyway, what does it matter if gay and straight are discriminated against, it’s all the same. And if you are indeed a foreigner, perhaps you don’t know where gay Japanese people “hang out.” I’d suggest trying seedy-looking darkened street alleys, because that’s where gay people like to hang out. Or check out your local neighborhood Japanese Fetish Bar! Perhaps they can offer you some assistance of where to find a gay Japanese person!
Oh, and Opera7b2 is completely awseome because it does not look gay anymore!

wow jesse, you never cease to amaze me. please keep replying to this thread, as i find your insights amusing!
bascule: great job of turning not only #ro into failure, but also osnews! i salute you!
Just came from partying, its 6 in the morning. I will go out to some after party club, but before, I wanted to say,
I am so happy to create situations such as I called strange things to the following individuals, but they could not say a word:
To Rajan R: You are a stupid american.
magicfecallator : Many elephants are FUCKING magicfecallator every day.
Thanks guys. I will never forget it. : )
Deniz.
sorry about that, I forgot to respond to you for… some reason. anyway, i can only take two elephants currently, if you’ve seen http://goatse.cx, you know what i mean *wink* I had to have some of my esophagus removed to accomodate elephant dong. as far as the ears go, i am open to new ideas, but i highly doubt much can be done about the situation
gettin it in the ass daily,

Hi everyone – um, it was me who pointed out the “un-PC” comment in the first place – didn’t mean it to turn into a flame fest, just seen too many good friends smashed in to let it slip.
[Bascule]
> I was relatively sleep deprived and not fully considering the ramifications of how it would be received in an international forum, and for any who misconstrued its meaning I apologize.
Accepted and ended. Not sure about the “uppity Brit” bit though…
>Seriously, the reaction by the P.C. thugs in the audience is nothing short of laughable. I’ve got news for you, the world isn’t P.C., and your innocent little eyes and ears are going to be soiled by a lot worse in times to come.
Already has sweetie. Long time ago. In all sorts of ways, not all of them fun (sigh).

>Just came from partying, its 6 in the morning.
Is the scene that good over there? Think I might emigrate… Could do with a change of scene from Club X in Cardiff.
Love’n’hugs to all.
you kind of just touched it with a joke, others were going to see it – i didn’t see them going off of your ‘analysis’. so therefore, you shouldn’t feel bad it was a ‘flame fest’, as you had no part in it
