“GoDaddy.com Inc., the world’s largest domain name registration company, told lawmakers Wednesday that it will cease registering Web sites in China in response to intrusive new government rules that require applicants to provide extensive personal data, including photographs of themselves. The rules, the company believes, are an effort by China to increase monitoring and surveillance of Web site content and could put individuals who register their sites with the firm at risk. The company also believes the rules will have a “chilling effect” on new domain name registrations.”
I wasn’t expecting such a morally correct / ethical move from GoDaddy.
To make up for it, they’ll probably release the announcement by tattooing it on a spokesmodel’s cleavage.
You make it sound like a bad thing.
Bring that commercial on!
In terms of making me want to buy domain registration from them, it certainly couldn’t be any less effective than their usual marketing.
Does anybody know how GoDaddy is/was doing economically in China?
Yes, they were selling illegal Chinese language edition versions of pre-alpha release candidate beta builds of Windows 8 to the North Koreans.
Well if you need a profit motive for the decision then keep in mind that China new domain registration rules would probably add a lot of overhead to the usual process, thus reducing GoDaddy’s profits. Still just cause a move isn’t completely altruistic doesn’t mean everyone should just shit all over it. Let GoDaddy have their one moment of dignity that they will probably ever have.
China’s move will put alot of domain squatters out of work. GoDaddy will help to protect these squatters’ jobs ;-p
However, I will not be surprise if these domain squatters work for GoDaddy ;-p
