Can’t WAIT to put this on my system. Gnome just keeps getting better and better all the time.
Gnome is neat, yet I still prefer my bloated KDE .
might as well give this one a go i guess :o)
(last i tried was like 1.4 or some such)
The only part of KDE i’m really particularly fond of is kicker… But, for some reason, kicker wont run under xdirectfb. GNOME, on the other hand, runs perfectly. On top of that, there is a directfb native gtk+/gdk. With directfb multi-app support, libgdk-directfb, xdirectfb, gnome (not running directfb native, but via xdirectfb), etc etc I have lots of toys to play with.

Gnome2 is a major and very noticable departure from what you are used to in gnome1. Some of the configurability/usability hasnt quite caught up yet. For example, configuration isnt as fun and flexible as it used to be. To change window managers you need to set an environment variable. I think you still need to set an environment variable to activate font anti-aliasing, correct me if I am wrong. But these things only take a short time to get used to and in other areas gnome2 just shines… and gnome2 is zippier than one would assume. Gnome2 and gnome1.4 apps coexist peacefully.
on a side-note window managers for kde3 and gnome2 are compatible. so, if for some sick reason you want to run kwin under gnome2, go for it. or metacity under kde3… (I just use waimea4 for both, waimea r0x)
*enjoying his directfb true translucent windows that update in real-time over such things as true translucent mplayer, but still wishing kicker ran under xdirectfb cuz he has OS X dock penis-envy*

…anybody know any other good kicker/dock-like apps other than gnome-panel that bothers me cuz it REFUSES to auto-hide or move from the top of the screen?
I’ve tried to compile GNOME 2.0 but with no success. I used the GARGNOME build scripts but every time I do it there is some compile error or some library is missing even if I strictly follow the guides! I’m running Debian Woody 3.0, BTW.
So, how do you build GNOME?
Pls, don’t suggest trying other distributions…
Dan: Drop by gnomesupport.org, head to the forums and we’d be more than happy to help you out.
I build G2 on GARNOME (Debian Sid) so I can help

You’re right about Gnome 2.0.x
You’re wrong when talking about Gnome 2.2 (which includes the RH8 font dialog that makes it possible to set AA on/off, different types of hinting and other options)
Eike’
You ever try to install KDE without Gnome? Try it sometime, you’ll find that it is not as bloated as you think. IT IS VERY QUICK.
Eike,

Yeah, you’re right, it makes you post twice

That’s rubbish. There are various kinds of panel in GNOME, and only the Menu Panel does as you describe (this is by design). If you want something more flexible (much more flexible than KDE’s panel implementation), right-click a blank area of a panel and select an option from the New Panel menu. A Floating Panel, for instance, can go anywhere on the screen. You can then add applets to these panels. The Menu Bar applet can duplicate the functionality of the Menu Panel, but can fit in any kind of panel (and hence can go anywhere on the screen).
if only because the kicker panel goes all the way across (or down) the screen. The GNOME panel grows as icons/applets are added. This look much more elegant when autohide is enabled. Now, if only I could put a functional trash can in the dock (like OS X).
Seriously… GNOME 2 (I’m running Redhat 8) is NICE. Nautilus has really come of age. It’s beautiful and actually loads slightly faster then Konqueror. Now if only they would add a better file selector.
Rimmer: “The GNOME panel grows as icons/applets are added.”
This is true for kicker as well (if configured that way).

A gnome edge panel will go across the edge of the screen too.
as for the trash, that needs some work
How do you add the Action menu (the Run program, etc menu items)to a new menu? I have Mandrake9.0 and Gnome2 with 2 menus on the screen(top & bottom) is really annoying. So, I have customized it to have a complete bottom taskbar, with all the accessory buttons, but I still have no run menu item, so I have to keep the top menu/taskbar until I figure this out. Help please?
MMmmm the only thing i miss now is Galeon 2…I have phoenix, but i find Galeon faster.
Anyway Gnome2 w/ Nautilus is very nice. They only need to improve the default theme, and add some flexibility to Metacity (i want the close button on the left side!)
KDE3 is still bloated, and very windowish (lack of ideas?)…
Does anyone know how to add a ‘show desktop’ button like in windows, or KDE?
This is planned for GNOME 2.2 – check out http://www.gnome.org/start/2.1/
How? I can’t figure it out
i’m really liking the way ACME looks.. should be a good thing..
Does anyone know where could I get Redhat 8 RPMS for this release?
Personally I would like to compile the stuff but don’t have the time at work to do so…
.. although there is no icon for it, you can assign a keyboard-shortcut for it in the shortcut preference dialog. It is called “Hide all windows and focus desktop”. I use ctrl-alt-d for this purpose.
