This release fixes a critical bug in GTK+ 2.0.8, which caused recent metacity versions to crash. It is source and binary compatible with previous releases in the GTK+ 2.0 series.

That bug (mentioned in the article) was biting me fairly regularly until I found a patch for it in GNOME’s bugzilla and then rebuilt my own deb for it and installed that. Luckily it wasn’t REALLY critical in that GNOME’s session manager would simply respawn metacity when it’d die. But, some windows would end up shifted, and I’d always be tossed back to Workspace 1. To anyone who has seen this bug first hand, know that with the refcount patch (included in the update, according to the changelog) will alleviate your troubles. I’ve had this package installed for several days without the bug resurfacing whereas it’d happen 2-3 times a day before if I used my desktop semi-heavily.
no need for:
while true ; do metacity ; done
Just wish IceWM worked well with gnome 2
