“SuSE is now available for free. In line with SuSE’s download policy, the entire 8.1 directory tree, equivalent to the SuSE’s Professional Edition has been uploaded to SuSE’s mirrors. As usual, there are no ISO images — instead SuSE provides a method to install it on your computer directly from an FTP server. You will need the boot CD: boot.iso (18MB). Download it, boot from it and type ‘install=ftp://ftp_server/directory’ of your chosen mirror at the boot prompt.” Read the rest of the newsbit and more instructions on DistroWatch.
It does not seem to boot.
on a side note, I just got an E-mail from Xandros….it sounds like they are in the mitst of building a live CD like Suse has or like Knopix has.
> It does not seem to boot.
That would be something – a non-bootable CD image called “boot.iso”!
I suppose your best bet would be to buy the boxed set, after all ๐
Or use the floppy disks.
>It does not seem to boot.
What exactly is the problem? Does it reads and reads the CD/DVD drive and then just spits out to the boot manager? If yes, this is a known issue and I hit it a month ago when I was installing SuSE 8.1 PRO with my DVD drive.
Only way to get around it would be to use another CD-drive, or use the floppies. I was also suggested to disable the APM and APIC in the BIOS.
I will not be downloading this. Reason: I have a 3 gig download limit. If i decide to install this distro on 2 pc’s, i’ve downloaded 1.2gigs. I have an allowance so i can download a single iso image per month, but as i will have to be downloading it more than once i will decide to use a different distro.
You can download all the packages on one of your own machines, run an FTP server on it and point the SuSE installer to your own FTP server.
This way, you will only need to download once. And the second installation, via your own home network, will be very fast.
I am able to boot with the iso-image and the bootdisk and everything goes well except two things. My logitech mouseman is correctly detected but doesn’t work, this happens with every distro and is not a problem for me, I just select Micorsoft compatible mouse and it works, but the biggest problem is that it doesn’t find any software to install!!!
I think that something went wrong with the upload, but I don’t know what (missing file or something like that)?
Has anyone else had this problem???
Did you type the FTP server’s path correctly, as shows in the tutorial page on suse.de?
Yes, I did Eugenia, because SuSE has to download something before you can get into the Yast, where I discovered that it couldn’t find any software.
I’m going to try and install suse again a little different now, by “forgetting” to tell it to install from ftp at the first option it presents.
are there any full iso images anywhere? installing from ftp isn;t really an option, as i’m on a dialup connection.
Had the same experience with it not finding software as above. Wrote the SuSE information desk and received the following @ 6:00 PM US-Eastern time:
“Dear SuSE Customer,
thank you for your request:

Yes, it is. Currently, though, there is only a live-eval version of 8.1 on the ftp site. We are scheduled to have the full version available by Friday afternoon.
I did notice that the 8.0 directory had FTP

Sorry for the inconvenience.

your SuSE Linux-Team!”
Looks like they are not going to have the full build out there until this afternoon (German time maybe?). Can we get confirmation on this?
I don’t think there is ISO download x86 suse 8.x, if u really desperade to try it, u only got 2 option, which is buy an official box of Suse, or why don’t just try other distribution??
Redhat is as good as suse, or maybe even better (haven’t try suse myself). Debian is good as well…….especially the package manager (apt-get).
but don’t try mandrake 9.0…. i tried it and decide to discard it within 1/2 an hour
oopss i mean u really only have 1 option
Is it possible to install SuSE from hdd partition and not through FTP server?
well seeing as I tried to install it on my laptop, I bet it is the APIC.
all it did though was tried, faild and went on to boot XP.
Does this version of the installer connects to a PPPoE connection or is it like 8.0 where it won’t dial-u? to anything else but a 56k dial-up connection; or use the *real* always on DSL/T1/T3/Cable? Just asking…
tried my best to verify that the server I was loading from (mirror.mcs.anl.gov) had mirrored 8.1, and it appeared to have done so. Re-transferred and burned the boot.iso cd, then ran the starttup and pointed it to /pub/suse/i386/8.1 (also tried /current). Still got the same effect where it puills up the installation program, I choose my settings, it scans for packages, then displays the “No base selection available” and “ERROR:No proposal” messages under the “SOFTWARE” selection item. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Could someone that it worked for post their steps, and any ideas I might be able to follow? This is very frustrating!
While I was looking for a fast server to install 8.0 (a couple days ago) stumbled upon a couple servers who had completed their 8.1 download. Unfortunately I wasn’t the only one and my installation timed out a couple times (twice too many, soooo many hours lost).
๐
Yesterday I was able to install 8.1 from a german mirror site (212.122.128.32)………it wasn’t really fast, but it worked. There are only a few mirrors which are already updated. The dutch mirror that I normally use is still not updated today………I think the people from SuSE need a couple of day’s to sort all the mirrors out.
By the way………….SuSE 8.1 ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!
I’m getting the exact same problem as oldweasel. I downloaded the 8.1 boot iso, everything was detected correctly, and when I finially got to the main screen, it wouldn’t allow me to select any packages, and there were no packages to select…it also said that there was no loader (lilo or grub) and I couldn’t select any.
I know I’m doing it correctly because I did the to install 8.0 last week, which is what I’m using to type this..
I tried all available servers…and it either wouldn’t let me connect, or I got the same problems….
Is anyone else getting this problem?
i’ve downloaded the whole dir for 8.1 and have a local ftp setup. I’m trying to update from suse 8.0->8.1, but only see two install options. New install or boot old system, it says that i have a linux system installed but i need to mount it. I mounted it but it still doesn’t give me the “upgrade install”, anyone know what i’m doing wrong or where must i mount suse 8.0?
“As usual, there are no ISO images — instead SuSE provides a method to install it on your computer directly from an FTP server.”
So, what does this mean? If you got the bandwidth (=money), than you got Suse Linux 8.1 Pro. But then, in this scenario you most likely have the money to buy the retail ($$$)version.
If you don’t have the money, you don’t have any choice now, do you? So, welcome to the machine my boy…
