…your discomfort in this case probably is related more to the fact that the guy is much more like “us” (big parenthesis here) than the usual killer you see in the news, and still, he and the community are getting much publicity over this fact… Maybe it’s not a good thing for “us”, but it’s something that really happened and, therefore, ‘news’.
It is DIRECTLY related to the OS scene.
Take me for example. I am typing this reply on my Opensuse machine, which has / and /home both formatted in reiserfs.
Tonight, I will reinstall, and format in XFS. Not because of some ideology that I will not use something a murderer created, or now that I know for certain he is a murderer.
No, I will be removing reiserfs from this machine as in essence it too is dead. It might not have been a one man show, but the head of the dragon is now cut off, and I cannot see it being developed much more than it is at the minute.
I might be completely wrong and someone might come along, take the source code and make an excellent fs, but, until I know for sure, I will change to a fs that currently is still being developed.
As a side note, apart from reiserfs… what is the best/fastest filesystem for Opensuse11 ?

It significant because it effectively is causing the end of a file system. ReiserFS is a dead end, as previously mentioned.
Shooting or stabbing someone can be argued from the perspective of a crime of passion. All it takes is a second to pull the trigger or to thrust a knife into someone. On the other hand, strangulation requires that you constantly apply force while the victim struggles to get free and thus requires a lot more determination. To strangle your wife for seconds/minutes while ignoring her struggles … that’s murder.
I hope they throw the book at him.
Uh? Stabbing or shooting someone requires that either:
-you carry a gun or a knife with you which means that the murder was planned in advance
-or that you go and retrieve it, so it’s not something which happens in a second as you said.

What does this mean for computing? ReiserFS gets a fork and a name change.
This story has been big news in the open source community because of his creation of the ReiserFS. No, it’s not directly a computer story, but it’s still of interest to the community.
The least significant part of the story is that the ReiserFS project seems to be languishing, and may not survive.
I suspect Hans just reduced his sentence from life to something less.
If HR had admitted guilt right at the beginning, shown some remorse and shown the body without any concern for sentence, he could then have expected some leniency.
Instead by hiding the body in a place that might never be found for decades, he really thought he was going to get away with it and could deny it and take his chances with the jury, after all he believed he was a whole lot smarter than everyone else.
Personally I’d say he deserves the maximum sentence any murderer can get, no sympathy from me.
I wonder if he could get a pen, some sheets of paper, maybe some Internet access … and just continue …

Based on what I’ve read/heard, the best that Reiser could hope for is paper and pen. I doubt seriously that the prison officials would allow him to get access to a computer, connect to the outside world, etc. He’s being punished for a reason: He’s an evil mo-fo.

Is how this m*f*er, being a murderer, knowing it for sure, deliberately tried to escape the law by using my home country as argument!!! How he and his defense tried to present Russia as completely opaque, evil country where his wife now happily lived. I cannot imagine how miserable one should be to say that to everybody, to look them in the eyes, and at the same time knowing that in reality you strangled your wife and buried the remains in the forest. What an a**hole…
Well this is specific posting here at OSnews does have relevence merely because for several months news related to this scumbag was posted here. And here and across OSS boards there existed people so delusional as to insist that he was innocent.
How many posts did we get from fanboys telling us how the US justice system doesn’t work, because obviously if they convicted this “innocent” man. How many sat and wrote self righteously how everyone just rushed to judgment.
Now, your silence speaks a wonders. Good riddance to this piece of sh**t Reiser, and I hope good riddance to the equally dumb fanboys that defended this loser. I only hope he gets whats coming to him in prison for killing an innocent mother.
That’s the fundamental problem with taking sides before a court case has been heard: It tends to cloud your judgement. Even if you didn’t rush to judgement, it seemed pretty damning when it was revealed how he hosed out his car and discarded the passenger seat. I mean, c’mon… normal people don’t do that. At least, normal people that I know. Reiser was clearly a man with something to hide, and there was unquestionably something wrong with his behavior. I wonder, though, what would have happened if Reiser hadn’t engaged in such odd behavior and there had been no forensic evidence. Would there have been enough to convict him? Interesting…
Our criminal justice system is imperfect but, in my opinion, there is no better alternative.
