A new version of E16 has been released. “Fix rendering issues when using pseudo-transparency; fix translucent moves of non-shaped windows; fix border right click (winops menu) in many themes; fix incorrect tracking of pointer motion when dragging window; fix potential trouble while exiting/restarting; various minor bug fixes and enhancements, see ChangeLog for details.” Get it here.
I’m glad to see that they are still maintaining E16 even though the main focus is on E17 at the moment.
I should hope so. Otherwise they would not have a stable, supported release available at all. Possibly for years.
… I know that it’ll be release when it’s ready… but the E team is shooting itself in the foot by not following any type of scheduled release plan ( point-release/alphas/beta/rc/release.) or even a versions. (0.16.95-100).
It makes almost impossible for maintainers to package and support the E17.
It’s a shame – we could really use another major DE, (Beyond GNOME, XFCE and KDE) – especially one that takes the road least traveled.

True, I agree with the points you make here. It may be possible by the time that E17 is released there will be no interest in it. I’m waiting for the final release, I haven’t ran any of the CVS builds yet, how is it coming along?
… To be honest, it’s been a while since I tested a CVS build. Mostly because a CVS build (unlike a pointer release) may or may not work or even build. (… And I have a number of build problems)
… Given the number of components and the complexity of the build sequence, the E team should really consider creating a GARNOME build script. (Again, combined with official point release source tar-balls)

Isn’t the easy_e17.sh script comparable to Garnome?
You can find it at:

Nice catch. Thanks.
I’ll test it when I have some free time.
Is it an official script?

AFAIK, it’s not an official script. But the guy who wrote it and maintains it, is an e17 developer and helps maintaining the http://www.get-e.org website.
I’ve been tracking e17 for awhile, and I’ve always used this script. I used it to install e17 in /opt/e17, so that I can keep it separated from my main install (with software that is managed with a package manager). I use a ~/.xinitrc file to set correct paths and start e17 at login.
You can always try Elive or the E17 Ubuntu, and in fact, there are very decent E17 Ubuntu repositories out there that track E17’s development pretty well (as in, updated packages every day).
ELive is a very nice E17 testing/showcase tool, no doubt about it.
… But it cannot replace my Fedora and CentOS/RHEL workstations.

The Ariel Atom is a great and fun car, but it cannot replace my family’s Renault Espace.
Speaking of kicking in open doors.
I am running E17 systems using both Elive and Geubuntu and have to say it is really nice. It does have some bugs but it is still in beta so I can forgive those easily enough. I am using it on a daily basis though.
