Although its official release is not until Nov. 14, a free evaluation of ‘Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2’ is already available from Microsoft’s download site. According to release notes available with the download, the update contains several substantial enhancements to Windows CE functionality, including video-over-IP and Web Services for Devices.
I’ve tried Windows CE a couple of times, but it tries to do *everything*, excelling at nothing particularly, unless you count the myriad of software available for it.
I’ve recently bought a 2nd hand Palm Tungsten TX, and goodness gracious, does it work well. Snappy, too. Hit the calendar button and there it is, ready to pick a date for another meeting. With the iPaq hx2490 I’d still be sitting there waiting for the calendar app to awake, while the other attendees filed out the door…
The thing is: you don’t have necessarily the choice of the OS..
I bought recently a phone+GPS (Asus P526, 330E), I don’t like much Windows CE but in France apparently you can’t buy a Palm which does the same..
