AmigaOS 4.0 for classic Amigas will go on sale November 30th (yes, this year). From the AmigaWorld.net news page: “On November 30 AmigaOS4 will ship for Classic Amigas. Hyperion Entertainment VOF made the announcement at the AmiWest banquet. The following will be included in the package: CD-ROM with AmigaOS4, one floppy disk to boot your Amiga (no pre-installed OS will be needed), and a manual.”
…on or about 2007-11-30 hell will freeze over and everyone will receive a full copy of Duke Nuke’em Forever.

Actually, Duke Nukem Forever’s set to ship January 1st. So they’re only ~32 days apart.
No.

Ah. Well, some websites had been posting January 1st as the release date.
Not like anyone really cares about DNF anymore…
No-one really cares what browser you’re using, so why post it?
It’s osnews that adds the version string for some special browsers, I don’t think you can do anything about it.
It’s specifically done if you post from the mobile page, fyi.
Unfortunately, I’m forced to use the mobile page even though my Nokia N800 got a resolution of 800×480…

It’s a bit of an issue. Eugenia has done a bloody good job, historically, of setting up this site to look okay on any Browser. Unfortunately, where it falls down is where the code in the pages insists you have a fairly limited browser when plainly you don’t. I have a Zaurus sl5500 and it does the same for that. 99% of non flash pages render okay – you even have a mode to make it look more flattened, but this site comes through in the “basic” version. Thre’s no reason why it should for the N800. Just goes to prove, not everything is as straight forward as detecting a browser and auto dishing out a page based on a theory about capabilities. I dunno, is there a subdomain that always gives the “full” version, regardless of browser? That would be useful if not.
Hmm…but why?
I don’t understand why? The guys signature (added by OSNews) is longer than the comment.
Sounds promising, doesn’t it? Just like all of the professor’s plans do at the beginning of the episode. I wonder what will happen between now and Nov 30 to spoil the rescue^Wrelease? Take over? Bankruptcy? Natural disaster? Internal conflict resulting in the departure of the dev team, which then sets up a website and starts from scratch? That last bit sounds very Amiga-esque. 😉

What about all of the above except release? ;D
How could I have forgotten “Gilligan drops the diskette master into the lagoon”? 😉
… ntion from the Leopard release in advanced of the release of better-than-OS-X-AmigaOS5…
To what end is that even a worthwhile goal, when there are probably a large multiple of machines perfectly capable of running OS X Leopard now compared to the number of classic Amigas that still boot up anything?
I fully agree the Amiga was far ahead of its time, but the problem with an OS for the machine is that it has a very limited market of actual machines that still exist, and it’s very unlikely that there will be many running the classic Amiga-capable OS on anything other than emulation. I’m guessing that when it comes to machines capable of running it, there are far fewer Amiga OS capable machines than those that can run Haiku natively, and Haiku at this point has very little native hardware support.
So, trying to outshine Leopard seems like a highly silly thing to bother with, and chances are trying to do things while Leopard is in the limelight is very counterproductive, to say the least. However, if the November 30th date is true, that’s still over one month after Leopard, so perhaps the publicity might even be heard/read by those that care.
It was a joke after reading Bill McEwans (is that his real lastname?) saying AmigaOS 5 would be “better” than OS X.
There is a hell of a lot of work to do on AmigaOS to get the same amount of features, but ofcourse then “better” doesn’t mean much.
I remember about 10 years ago they talked about it. I can’t believe they will release it. Actually I don’t believe it at all. There have been several annoucements of it already and nothing has been released yet.
I’ll be president of the USA before they release it.

Yesterday liberal party totally defeated right-wing populists in parliamentary elections after two years of their rule of my country (Poland), and I was already surprised by that (and in fact I’m very happy!) BUT two miracles in 24 hours is simply too much for me 😉
Talking more seriously – I’m very sceptical, as always when it comes to “new Amiga things”.
Well there is a market for OS4, not a big one, but there are plenty of classic Amigas still going out there.
I think people here are overly sceptical because they don’t keep track of the various amiga companies, Hyperion actually have a pretty good track record when it comes to delivering updates to OS4.
Even if it turns out they can’t make the date due to some unforeseen obsticale I think it’s likely that it will be released this year.
“””
“””
Perhaps. Is there special software available somewhere to help people do this? 😛

Aside from enthusiasts wanting a trip down memory lane, I really don’t get the hype about Amiga.
Yes, it was way ahead of it’s time way back when, but how can it possibly be taken seriously now?
In a world where PC hardware is as cheap as chips (excuse the pun) and Operating systems can be had for free, where could it possibly fit in?
The official website for AmigaOS4.0 has a strapline “Remember when computing was fun?”
Erm, excuse me Hyperion, we have Linux, an operating system that anyone can tinker with to thier hearts content. We have an overwhelming choice of hardware. We have the WWW. We have some of the most advanced and exciting games ever created. In case you hadn’t noticed, computing is unbelievably fun!
So I guess, “enthusiasts only need apply”
I’m all for trips down memory lane, but don’t try to hype up a product that has being trying to ship for years and tout it as “better than MacOS”
Edited 2007-10-22 06:31
its quite obvious you dont get it. it doesnt matter how many free operating systems there are. it doesnt matter that you got linux or whatever hardware, since none of it is amiga.
the line “remember when computing was fun” is very suitable as amiga isnt linux/macos/whatever. its different and better in some areas and actually very much fun and a joy to use in comparison- at least it is to me, as to many others. if you dont think so, or even worse, havnt even tried it before making you post, then fine its no problem, you can go an use whatever suits you the best, but that doesnt make amigaos any less relevant for all the strengths and unique feeling it adds.
and noone has tried to hype amigaos as being better than macos anywhere. aliquis made a joke related to the claim that the not-existing, not-revealed amigaos 5 would beat osx. so for those making continuous irrelevant posts regarding it, please realise that we are talking two different companies and two different operatingsystems. hyperion and amigaos4 can not be held responsible.
You can’t add a decent GUI to it. At least not presently.
You could write one, but I don’t know how much fun that would be.
An overwhelming choice of completely similar, mostly low quality, hardware.. all of which is dull rehashing of something that sucked in the first place. The PC has raw muscle. It does not have class and it isn’t interesting at all.
You obviously don’t work in web programming… the web is shit. Unbelievably shit. It’s really much the same story as with the PC. Somehting that was just barely good enough was picked up and turned into a money maker, and now we’ll be stuck with HTML for decades. Woopteef–kingdoo.
The Internet is a great invention. The web is quite possibly the worst thing to happen to it…
Yeah. Hahahahahaha. Funne!
Of course it’s for enthusiasts only! Viewing it as anything else if of course silly! The best analogy I can think of is antique car enthusiasts who insist driving their old cars is more fun, even though by today’s standards those cars are difficult to maintain, relatively unsafe, have terrible gas mileage and in some cases can’t even go that fast. Of course it’s all about the reminiscing! But you can bet there will always be a decent-sized audience interested in this stuff.
Anyway, one of OSNews’ big appeals has always been for me, the examining of exotic operating systems. Amiga is certainly exotic, and on top of that is one of the greatest legends of computing history.
todays games for the PC is a joke compared to those for the amiga.
You know, back in the amiga days, games were actually fun, people cared about gameplay, about fun. these days, all they care about is how big an nvidia card you are forced to buy, and how many custom pixel shader effects they can possible throw in
Spoken as if from someone who only used MS-DOS back in the days your text makes sense because then you didn’t knew anything better and stuff could only go better from there.
But today you can’t get something cheap, technically superior, with an OS which is innovative, slim and just works, the best games, tinkerability, lots of freeware, a huge demoscene, lots of hobbie programmers, portability and easy to bring to your friends and so on all in the same package.
The Amiga would be like buying the ASUS EEPC for it’s price and portability, get hardware performance comparable to the Mac Pro, a better and more innovative OS than OS X, all the games of Windows, the tinkerability of Linux, more freeware/shareware/PD software/images/music freely available on the net than your Linux dist has, a scene the size of the total current one, and so on, relativly speaking.
Ah, whatever, throw in the power of youtube and iTunes/last.fm/shoutcast aswell thanks to demos, intros and all the modules
Or to keep on with that useless car analogy, Windows is like a Volvo (I’m swede), everyone else has it, it works for ok for all purposes, it’s sort of pricy and not that very fun or intresting.
Linux is like your own home built kit car based on a Skoda, sure it was cheap, sure you have tweaked it like http://www.vedbil.se/.
MacOS may be your Audi or whatever, but AmigaOS is still that old Mustang…
Ok, that was useless, but anyway
Btw, is it impossible to add more supported formats to iTunes? It suck to play ogg in MP3 in iTunes, OGG in VLC and modules in CocoModX. I want them all in the same player and I want all my music to be sent rapported to last.fm.

Even my DS can do it all in one player, why can’t my mac? =P
bb_matt, you know what? You really will never get it. You was not probably part of that history, or you would have at least some level of understanding of those ppl, still living their Amiga dream.
Linux and fun, right? That speaks for itself. You would really have to understand the Amiga past era. Replace Linux in previous sentence with whatever OS, even Amiga OS.
As for me, I can hardly find any technology today, which even remotely relates to what Amiga really meant. And you know what? It will probably stay that way a little bit longer. I can see nice technologies here and there, but still can’t find anything which completly replaces Amiga era experience in such a complex way.
But – the computing world is changing. If ppl think that AmigaOS itself might change it, they are imo wrong too. We are moving to internet era, communication channels convergence, new paradigms. Sooner than later, “the new Amiga” will be born, but it will most probably has nothing in common with PC HW, typical PC OS, etc., so no, Linux is not going to make it either imo …
Cheers,
Petr
I was a part of it and i still have a hard time understanding this. It would have been different if there had been a string of Amiga releases since but all there has been is broken promises. It looks an awful lot like an unhealthy abusive relationship.
Well, its certainly more fun to have something to have fun with at all rather than reading about how fun it will be whenever (if ever) you have it.
I’ve been using computers since 1981, my first being a ZX81. My mates had Vic20’s and then Commodore64’s, whilst I upgraded to the Spectrum.
It was great fun, learning to program basic etc.
But times have moved on and I’ve moved with them.
I’m now a web programmer and I enjoy it immensely.
As for Linux not having a decent desktop, where have you been?
It’s come along in leaps and bounds and it’s been a frustrating, fascinating and enjoyable ride.
To say that you can Tinker more with Amiga than Linux really does show an amazing lack of knowledge.
No, I’m not a Linux fanboi, or a Mac fanboi or a windows fanboi, I enjoy them all.
And I still can’t see what the hype is about AmigaOS – the official website is so scant on detail, it’s laughable. The link to the apps available is also laughable.
The term “flogging a dead horse” comes to mind…
I never said MORE.
But since you have no memory protection on the Amiga you can more or less change whatever in the OS without risking anything because at worst all you need to do is reboot and not load whatever patch you used and it’s all back to normal again.
And there was quite a few nice tools, utilities, hacks and patches which did stuff and it was fun to test them. I know you can for example replace the explorer in Windows but it’s nothing I have ever tried, and in OS X you are rather limited. In Linux/BSD and AmigaOS there was more fun “hacks” you could try.
Amiga Inc and their webpage suck, what’s the news?
What Amiga Hype? Amiga Obsloete?
Only in your ignorant mind.

Most of the programs here are available from AmigaOS…
Enjoy Amiga!
And btw speaking of old cars Amiga has the small footprint of a modern SMART car, or Fiat 500

AmigaOS is at your service!
It is the computer and the OS that MUST SERVE YOU…
And not the opposite… YOU SERVING THE COMPUTER!…
…As it happens in Windows and Linux…
