Openbox 3.4.3 has been released. “Openbox is a minimalistic, highly configurable, next generation window manager with extensive standards support. Openbox lets you bring the latest applications outside of a full desktop environment. Most modern applications have been written with GNOME and KDE in mind. With support for the latest freedesktop.org standards, as well as careful adherence to previous standards, Openbox provides an environment where applications work the way they were designed to.”
This is the best damn window manager there is, period! Openbox does what it says without drowning your system in the process…just an impressive piece of software.
Probably you’re right mate, however, have you tried FVWM? That’s the best WM ever
yeah, these guys really got it right, I wash blackbox was this all those years ago.
Though I dont think this is the place for WindowManager version announcements.
OSNews should be used for OS ‘News’ – for example, if a new WindowManager comes out that makes an OS behave in a new or interesting way, yes thats news.
But a point revision of an existing window manager is not osnews worthy IMHO.

The change list is actually quite extensive.

At a time when handheld and low-power devices are becoming more prevalent and at the same time more demanding in terms of a GUI, and there are more and more people interested in breathing new life into older and less-capable (but still functioning) hardware, I think it is interesting enough news when newer and more capable versions of a window manager are released. Not all OSes and window managers are meant for over-bloated power-hungry desktop use.
??!!??!?
What kind of question is that?
This has more to do with Operating Systems than most!
Even if it is just an update of an existing WM!
I mean, this news or any news related to window managers or desktop enviorments and its related apps are news worthy, because without them you could do nothing useful with the plain system!
Apps make or brake an OS… and desktop and window managers allow you to use your system in a more convinient way, not every body is a Command Line expert.
Operating Systems need apps to work, and this is a primary one! This allows you to manage all those other trivial apps that are not OSNews worthy…
– This seems a fairly shallow reasoning, same goes for drivers.
OpenBox is darn good so dont get me wrong, I used it on my main desktop for a while.
but there’s so many window managers for linux, fvwm, windowmaker, fluxbox, openbox, E, afterstep, metacity, kwm, icewm etc… and this is only for os’s that run X11!
so major releases maybe are news worthy (like when E17 hits stable!)
If window managers point releases are news, why not gdesklets, beagle, thunderbird, fbpanel, perlpanel, thunar etc.
This is what freshmeat.net is for.
PS – RE: My comment about the point release, I read the openBox changelog and it looks like a nice release, but its not newsworthy – ei, significant feature, a rewrite or some component, significantly faster etc. just good incremental changes.

All good topics in my opinion! Otherwise this site would just be about when the Ubuntu or Vista developers pass alpha or beta gas.
If thats the case then OSNews should report more evenly in covering this software. (I dont see any posts about new versions of icewm or any about gDesklets for example)
The interviews with smallers OS devs are great as well as one of the freetype devs. Id prefer see more interviews or even an outsiders commentary on the progress of different OS or OS-related projects are good.
Here’s your invitation – submit something!

Feel free to submit. Oh, and remember, you can’t demand anything from us, really.
Didnt realize the mixed coverage of linux desktop software was due to lack of reporting, sorry to sound so demanding. and Ill keep contribution in mind
With all the bloated eye candy sucking up resources with KDE, Gnome, etc. I’ve been a fan of minimal Desktops for a while now. I get a wild hair every now and again and take KDE for a spin, hate it. Then I take Gnome for a spin, it’s OK. I always end up going back to Fluxbox, the speed, ease of use and the tabbing just simply ROCKS.
Anyway the point is why waste so much system resources on eye candy? A desktop should look good, be very functional and just leave the resources to the application. I’m running an up to date system (AMD64 x2 6000+, 4 Gig RAM, etc.) I just love the speed, functionality and options with the “Box’s” desktops!
Cheers –
Does anybody know a simple Window Manager that allows to join many windows into one frame with tabs?
As simple as possible and non-tiling, please.
Thank you!
Fluxbox?

I’ve tried Openbox before. One of my first comments was: “It’s like Fluxbox, but without tabs”, to which someone on the Openbox forums replied: “Don’t worry! you’ll soon get used to not having them!” I was not impressed.
Plus the XML format of the config files was awful to wrestle with compared to Fluxbox’s much simpler format. As for ICCCM compliance, I haven’t noticed any significant differences in application behaviour.
While I’ll happily say that Openbox is very good, Fluxbox is simply better. I will not compare it to other WMs like FVWM having not really used them.
