The maemo team has just released a development version of a new browser engine, built on open source and Mozilla technologies. Testers and contributors are welcome. This version is functional, safe and available for download. It works on the Nokia N800 with the latest Internet Tablet OS 2007.
It is kinda amazing to think of being able to fit Gecko onto a ‘phone. I would think that KHTML or Opera would fit better, but if Gecko works for them, more power to them although Gecko can feel a bit heavy on a desktop.
Browser for XO machine from OLPC is one of example of Gecko engine working with lower hardware requirement. It will be hardly a surprise Maemo team (some of them are participating in OLPC) took lesson from that project and implement it on Nokia N800.
a nice alternative, but one thing may dissapoint:
“6.The browser will switch to the Mozilla based browser for maemo.”
Can’t both browsers be installed at same N800? It would be a much better option (choices!).
Still… nice milestone!
