The Syllable team has released a development build which includes the new ABrowse. “This week’s development build is now available and includes the new version of ABrowse. It will only run on 0.6.4, so if you’ve been waiting to try it, now is your chance! Note that there is no way to upgrade from a previous release of Syllable using a development build, so unless you’re happy to replace your existing installation, wait for the official release of 0.6.4 or use a virtual machine i.e. VMware or Qemu.”
I’m assuming this is the new Webkit based Abrowse, which takes the browser into a much more useful direction, good for them. How is the mail client these days? Last time I used it, it wasn’t quite up to day to day usefulness as far as I was concerned.
I guess it depends on when you last tried Whisper. It is now at “Alpha8”. It’s now shaping up to be a fairly solid little client, but the biggest single complaint to date is the lack of IMAP support: Whisper currently only supports POP3 & [E]SMTP.
Ah, so still a bit to go. Either way, it looks like the one of the most promising alternative operating systems out there. Keep up the good work!
Just to check up, I finally go the VMware image just to have fresh look at Syllable(only 6.3, so no new WebKit goodness). It’s still progressing steadily, but there are still rough edges, though some of my problems were VMware slowness related. Unfortunately there is still the lack applications(or quality thereof), but still shaping up nicely.
Yes, it’s the usual problem: we need more developers. Hopefully the new stuff we’re doing will help attract some more, but it’s tough to establish a new OS like Syllable no matter what.
Since they’ve now ported WebKit over to Syllable, I wonder if they can build a widget application layer like Dashboard on top of WebKit as well.
I imagine that it would be a good way to start off with creating more applications that Syllable users can use.
I mean, if Firefoxit ( http://firefoxit.blogspot.com ) could add widget/gadget functionality to Firefox, then why not Syllable?
I think the problem that’s prohibiting the implementation of widgets etc is purely a lack of developers…
Yeah, considering the work that still needs to go into the operating system itself, much less the “major” applications, I would think a widgets frame work would be lower on the priority list.
