Here is one potential buyer.
I hope this a lot better than RC3, if not I’m going to go to SuSE 8.1, which my friend said is very good.
since this morning and so far it works great.
and i DO plan on buying the dvd version, to show support…and it’s just convienient to have!
that I could find a site to download it from.
hmm might have to get up early if i want to beat the rush tomorrow…
i have a couple CD-Rs reserved for this.
what kind of acpi support does mandrake 9 have? i’m having trouble compiling it into RH 7.3. there are supposed to be kernel patches and application patches involved, I think.

Thanks,
I was going to wait because none of links via their web site were connecting.
Your link did and pretty fast to.
It’s a major evolution in the Linux-desktop field, and will also empower your servers like never before.
Wow, using GCC 3.2, KDE 3 and GNOME 2, as well as some new ugly icons, makes it a major evolution. So Red Hat 8.0 is the big bang? I’m gonna upgrade to this version and use it till RH 8.0 stable comes out
Can someone who’s used 9.0 or one of the release candidates tell me how close to ‘pure’ Gnome and KDE Mandrake is? I tried 9.0 RC3 and liked the look & feel ok, but I’m just wondering how much they tweaked the two desktops, and if it looks and behaves that way on any distro that doesn’t tamper with it.
As for 9.0, I tried RC3 and was mostly happy with it, but seemed a little rough around the edges. For instance, when I tried to fire up any games in the Arcade submenu (ATI Radeon 7500 vid card), the screen went black and never recovered. (For all the supposed stabliity in Linux, I’ve gone almost 2 years without a crash in Win2k and managed to crash Mandrake 9 in less than 30 minutes … hmmmmm …)
Also, when I told (KDE) to open mp3 files with XMMS instead of the default player, XMMS would no longer function .. it would just start up and die. Of course, I am going to reserve judgement until I install the final release, but hope they were able to smooth out some of the rough edges … unless those rough edges happened to somehow be my fault
“For all the supposed stabliity in Linux, I’ve gone almost 2 years without a crash in Win2k and managed to crash Mandrake 9 in less than 30 minutes … hmmmmm …”
Now, was that the kernal you crashed, or just the window manager? Maybe it was just the application? I don’t think anybody here would claim that xwindows, KDE, Gnome, or especially a 3D accelerated app was anywhere near as stable as Linux…
Besides, you compare a long released product with a beta one, and thats just unfair.
I like 9.0 a lot. It’s runing great and all those tools in Mandrake Contro Center are awsome. I also like the new looks of Mandrake 9.0 and I like the new icons a lot. This is the best distribution version I ever used. I am laso thinking of buying their box with DVD to show some support for such a gret product. Bravo Mandrake team!
Dp you get a black screen where somewhere it says a kernal panic, or did you screen just stop responding? If the latter, press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, and redo your work :-). If the kernel panic happened, you are better off filling a bug report, after rebooting of course. You should have written down the problem (the message on the screen), and submit it.
I went to buy (!) the stuff on MandrakeStore, and I’m thinking about buying the PowerPack Edition…however, it fails me to see the difference between that and the personal one (except cd count)… and not to say what’s up with the DVD workstation…
My point is…shouldn’t they try to inform us a little better?
… still going for the PowerPack, though
The PowerPack package comes with stuff like StarOffice 6.0, ViaVoice and 60 day support (for 8.0, not sure about 9.0).
But don’t be fooled by going for the expensive packages that they would make more money and don’t feel you contributed more. Because Mandrake makes the same amount of money as in PowerPack and Standard Edition, PowerPack is just more expensive because it comes with more bundled apps.
Now, was that the kernal you crashed, or just the window manager?
For desktop work xwindows (or KDE/Gnome) crashing is equivalent to Windows entire system) crashing : in both cases you’ve lost your work. The fact that the Linux base system hasn’t come down with it is a small consolation.
I don’t think anybody here would claim that xwindows, KDE, Gnome, or especially a 3D accelerated app was anywhere near as stable as Linux…
or as stable as Windows for that matter (my experience – your milage may vary) I’m still more productive in Windows although i really wish that wasn’t true.
Tyr, you are right. It’s sad but true.
every time a major distro comes out I stay with linux for a couple of months and, after finding out linux not being as stable or friendly as W2K (i.e. problems using my printer, camera, web-cam, scanner etc…) I fall back into windows again.
I hope that RH8 stays for a long time as my main OS!!!!!!

So, in other words; i’m going to contribute to StarOffice and those other apps as well? That’s quite ok by me
Hello all,
I bought the 8.2 Power Pack Ed, and i plan now to by the 9 one.
But i can’t make the diference between the 7 CD’s set and the Workstation DVD.
Does the DVD contains the same things as the 7 CD’s of the powerpack edition or there is less applications in the DVD ( workstation stuff, without multimedia stuff…)
The website is not complete at all….
The full edition of the Powerpack on a DVD would be very convenient !!!
See ya !
Genaldar-try planet mirror. I jst downloaded 9.0 from their public server overnight-no issues, no problems. All the sites on mandrake are HAMMERED….guess they got a popular thingie!
Raylo-the DVD has all the code from the 7 disks. Like you say, very convenient.
linux sucks.
I am running RC3 and was wondering how to go about easily and painlessly “upgrading” to the release version? Would running Mandrake Update do this for me? Or do I need to downburn the new isos and “upgrade” (or even re-install)?
FWIW, I’m running rc3 now on a dual boot Dell Inspiron 4000 without too many problems… Fonts still seem a pain: Mandrake Control center’s Fonts->Get_Windows_Fonts dies on me every time (worked ok in mdk-8.2).
OpenOffice.org’s interface font is HORRIBLE – eventhough it renders aa fonts in the “document body” correctly (and this is after the “Andale Sans UI” font replacement…).

I tried planet mirror, I got horrible speeds. I’m gonna try the link somebody posted once I get back to my desktop. I’m gonna be out of town for 3 days so I figure that should be more then enough time to get it downloaded.
btw whoever was thinking of using mandrake 9 until redhat 8 comes out, you might want to know redhat 8 is supposed to be out on Monday
Hi Darius,
I’ve had problem with Radeon 7500 since 8.2, my screen just went blank and nothing short of reboot will help. After reading the cooker mailing-list, i found out that there is a problem with theatre module in XF86 (which give xv). Check it out, maybe it’ll solve your problem.
Thanks for the link XtEnDer, its downloading at a pretty good clip (25k a sec on each of the 3 cds). Not quite as good as it gets but network performance at my school is a little spotty since so many moron leave kazaa and morpheus etc. on the default “rape my bandwidth” settings. And its much better then the 5 or 6k I was getting on pm. They might even be done downloading before I leave town in a couple hours. Stupid question, are there different distros for different languages (like windows) or is it an all encompassing package? I know they come with a ton of different languages but I forget if you choose your language first thing during the install.
“Hi Darius,
I’ve had problem with Radeon 7500 since 8.2, my screen just went blank and nothing short of reboot will help.”
Yup, same thing here … ALT+DEL+BACKSPACE doesn’t do shit, and neither does CTRL+ALT+DEL
“After reading the cooker mailing-list, i found out that there is a problem with theatre module in XF86 (which give xv).”
Uhh, ok … does that mean it’s fixable ?
“I don’t think anybody here would claim that xwindows, KDE, Gnome, or especially a 3D accelerated app was anywhere near as stable as Linux…”
Well, that’s not really a fair comparison, is it? If the GUI engine (xwindows) isn’t stable, then who the hell cares how stable the kernel is? I mean, I’m not running a server here. Not only that, but it takes longer to reboot into KDE/Gnome than it does to reboot Win2k entirely.
happens to me alot in Linux =) atleast until I installed gentoo….
I say for you people wanting Linux to work seamlessly learn a little more about how it works before you complain so much.
only complaint i have against gentoo is the compilation times =( my CPU sucks.
When Xwindows got messed up, and ALT+DEL+BACKSPACE doesn’t do shit, and neither does CTRL+ALT+DEL, what you can do is:
1) reboot first, of course (maybe salute to reset button 😉
2) echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq
3) reboot again if you prefer here
Once you’ve done that, if Xwindows does that stupid thing again, you can perform these steps.
* press ALT-SysRq-S twice or more to sync disk
* press (Left)ALT-SysRq-u to umount all disks
* press ALT-SysRq-B to reboot, (it’s the same thing as “reset”)
Actually, after Xwindows is dead the kernel still got control.
Use some commercial X, like Metro.
If KDE crashes, I highly suggest you scout for other WMs/DEs.
Besides, since installing XFree 4.0 and KDE 3.0, never had a produtivity loosing crash.
And, oh, BTW, the DVD in the PowerPack is the same as the 7 CDs, maybe it has less stuff. I would prefer a DVD rather than 7 CDs – at least I don’t have to stick around to swap CDs.
IMHO, Mandrake 9.0 is the best one out there. It recognized everything, was very easy to setup, and is BEAUTIFUL looking (well, KDE 3 is, anyway). Plus, it runs more smoothly than previous versions of the OS.
As for stability – I really don’t know what people are doing to crash their system. Never had a problem. Ever.
