Via Technologies has unfurled a prototype for a mini notebook that will compete against similar small computers touted by Samsung and Intel, but sell for less. The Taiwanese company is also showing off motherboards that will appear in smart phones in about a year.

While I wouldn’t really want to use Windows XP on one of those VIA based systems, but their continued smaller size makes them look good for running a light weight version of Linux. I wonder if these little boards will find their way out into the wild like VIA’s pico/nano/mini-ITX boards which are great for tiny custom systems.
Well, with a 1.2 ghz proc and 512 or more ram, these things would run XP fine. But XP is a 6 year old operating system, while you can also run the latest & greatest linux-based OS on this thing. So I’d love to have such a laptop…
As an amateur photographer I like the idea of the Nanobook. I can just imagine taking this thing with me when I’m out taking pictures. When I fill up my SD card I can off load them to the notebook and reuse the card. When I’m done I can use it to view my pictures and see what I got.
I see some potential for that little device in the photography world if it doesn’t cost and arm and a leg and has decent performance.
I like small laptops and anything >13″ is HUGE for me.
But these 7″ toys are obviously too small.
If only Foleo could work without these bloated smartphones i would buy one.
I agree with you. It’s quite hard to see how a standard OS with an unmodified GUI will work on a 7″ screen. What kind of resolution you going to get with that thing?
On the other hand, it is cheap at $599…
if they use this (its been around for a now so cheaper perhaps) World Smallest 7-inch HDTV
then you will be more than fine.

VIA showing a prototype means we’ll have to wait another 5 years before it gets into production, if at all. Remember the Nano-ITX?
