For a second I thought that the AOL client would be available on Lindows. That would be *some* news!
Now,,,, why wouldnt they just use mozilla? If all they want is the ability to communicate with AOL members, just install the IM client,,, not the whole dog of a browser.
Mozilla is lacking a production quality spell checker. That’s the case on Windows, I’m not sure what’s the situaltion on Linux. I know of 2 people who prefer Netscape 7 to Mozilla just because of the spell checker.
read the announcement again and you will find that the AOL client is available in Lindows. they use wine to make it work (it’s still in a sneak preview phase)
Thanks for the info, you’re right — I should have read the announcement. Still, a native AOL client would mean that desktop Linux has become a serious contender.
Despite everything, Lindows still astonishes me. They’ve got the Wal-Mart deal, they have improved their interface and added features and now this. Click_N-Run for new members is way, way too high…it will be interesting to see how that goes. However, they may be thinking if people pick up an inexpensive Microtel PC at Wal-Mart, paying the membership fee might not seem so bad to Joe User. To Joe User, it means being able to get all the software he/she wants.
Anyone else see that title as a bit misleading? I dunno, but it seems to suggest an alliance that doesn’t exist even in the short write up, heh.
How bout something a little less sensational?
“Lindows runs|installs|powered by Netscape”….
I agree very misleading. I though, “What, AOL and Lindows”. Then I read on.
Just a little LindowsOS report from a new insider…
I have been using LOS for about a week now and so far, I would have to call it “the most useable Linux Distro that I’ve ever tried” and I’ve tried quite a few….
It is VERY easy to install and just seems to work. “Click and run” has so far, worked without a hitch.
I just tried StarOffice for the first time ( I also tried the OO version on Windows as well ) and it seems to be a better office suite than MS Office. Also, I had no problems reading MSO documents or listening to streaming audio using the RA8 player from Real Networks.
It is certainly, the first Linux Distro that I can wholeheartedly reccommend to a new computer user.
You thought Linux was safe from The Corporation … you were wrong.
The company is called Lindows.com, not Lindows. The OS is LindowsOS, not Lindows.
It’s like OpenOffice.org – you have to have the .org.
I have read and heard only good things about Lindows, but I feel that it has some flaws. The first is the whole mystery surrounding it. It has been marketed as a low-grade thing. Would you, honestly, be proud to say you got your computer at Wal*Mart? I think they’d do better to make is _slightly_ for technical (more *nix-like) and then market it. People have gotten to know Windows, I’m sure that if they just got to know *nix it would be less hard to use and more powerful.
“Would you, honestly, be proud to say you got your computer at Wal*Mart?”
No, but I wouldn’t be ashamed either. Is buying a computer for CompUSA or BestBuy really any different? I bought my tv at Walmart… It works as well as any other I have owned.
Most people simply view the computer as an appliance, and not many people care where they get appliances or who makes them. That’s the market Lindows is after.
But don’t you think techies would? If you were a techie person, would you rather have a Debian distro installed on your computer that you slaved over for hours, or some crappy Wal*Mart computer? That’s also something you have to look at–the quality of their computers. They include cheap parts, and really aren’t all that great. I think Lindows underestimated itself.
In 6 months:
“Look ma, the AOL stocks are falling like flies”
Lindows.com just announced yet another thing that EVERY Linux distro can do!
simply amazing
Obviously, you don’t understand who is the Lindows.com customer.
It is NOT programmers or people who build computers for fun. It is targeted at those people that are looking to buy that first computer or that next computer and don’t won’t to buy Microsoft.
Aww, come on, stop being a nitpicker. Unless Eugenia mistakenly called it Bindows or jindows or Kindows or whatever, I think Lindows is close enough.
There is a difference between being able to install it and having it installed by default. 🙂
