The first batch of the RISC OS 5 source code has been released today for free download, hours before the start of the Wakefield 2007 show. The upload comes after Castle revealed its shared source licence. The first set of components released by RISC OS Open and Castle comprises of major applications and modules that form part of the backbone of the operating system. These include utility CloseUp; desktop applications Paint, Draw and Edit; the RISC OS Filer and Pinboard; CDFS, various CD device drivers and CDFS Filer; the MessageTrans and BASIC modules; and Browse fetchers. The software is written in a mix of BASIC, C and ARM assembler.
I do actually find this a quite exciting prospect for us in risc os land… erm.. yea… just gotta wait and see i suppose… just waiting for someone to rip out win ce of a nice sleek ARM laptop and replace it with RO now.. and the nintendo DS.. and erm.. erm.. some random xscale scisi card… and.. erm.. my nokia 3330 and erm… erm… erm…
for those of you that have never had the joy of using !paint.. huzza! ( !summink means its an application )
Yes, very exciting
>for those of you that have never had the joy of using !paint
Dont forget !draw
>!summink means its an application )
Just to make that a little clearer, if a folder has a pling infront of its name it is indicating that it is an application directory instead of a standard folder.
A ‘pling’? That’s the first time i’ve heard an exclamation mark referred to as that.
Well thats what its name:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exclamation_mark#Computers
My brother and his acorn programming friends used to call it ping too, but only inrelation to computing.
yeah i used to call it a pling during my risc os days, but now i know better 😉
# = sharp
! = bang
sharp+bang = shebang, as in shell scripts: #!/bin/sh
anyway, its a shame that its only the applications and a few modules so far that have been released, not the kernel, or enough to actually build risc os 5.
it looks like castle want ro5’s !paint and !draw to be updated to select’s featureset by someone for free.
anyone know what version of !browse has been “opensourced” as i remember having a copy of !phoenix, which was !browse 2.09 (or something higher than 2.07 that us clan folk got) with javascript and stuff.
yes, i rember the first time i heard the word pling.. i think it’s a great word for a !
anyway, yes, !draw, these mac and pc adobe lovers could learn alot from draw, and artworks ( xarax on the doze ) draw is like how getting things done should be, like paint it is a little short of features, but that is again what makes it great.
any mac monkey who uses draw for a while will be like me when (if) they go bac to thier mac tastic programs.. just like.. what the fonze.. why, why why does it have to be like this. clunky unituitive crazy tape and string interfaces, pointless endless over engineering, if you are actually good at computer design you dont really need the filters special effects etc.
it will be before we have the whole kernel in the Open Source tree…And after that, I wonder how long it will be before we have a DS port. Heh. A DS running RiscOS would be the ultimate portable device.
More correctly, how long before the assembly bits are re-written in C and someone ports it to another architecture?
The licence prevents ports to other architectures
Waiting for a Psion netBook port!
