E16 version 0.16.8.7 and epplets version 0.10 are now available for
download. “Add option to show windows on all desks in focus list. The CM now renders to the composite overlay window. Fix various updates when external background changes.” Many more fixes are in the changelog.
Are there news about E17? It’s sad that it has had some of the pieces that Vista and OS X have got later than E17; still there’s no E17 but there’s Vista. And then, there’s compiz, which has brought to the linux desktop more eyecandy than Enlightenment window managers. People is just getting bored of waiting to E17.
Agreed in fact and spirit. I think there are lessons to be learned here. Rasterman’s technical skills and insights are nearly beyond reproach, but his leadership skills and understanding of the community have doomed his best efforts to push the envelope for X11 desktops. Nothing about E is boring, but everything about it is niche, and nothing about it translates into mainstream progress.
> still there’s no E17 but there’s Vista.
E17 svn is pretty stable. Some even claim it to be more stable then e16 itself. E17 vs Vista, that is comparing apples with oranges. They have complete different goals. I do not think that E17 is ever ment to be in the desktop race. Even though it could have.
> And then, there’s compiz, which has brought to the linux desktop more eyecandy than Enlightenment window managers.
There is no reason why E17 could not do that as well. Watch Rasters au linux conf video, he explains it all in detail why they do not do that, if you really care.
There has been a (experimental) module around though, that allows you exactly that kind of stuff. It actually worked pretty well for me. (aka bling module)
Yes compiz is nice, but show me 1 peace of software that does the same as E17 with the same resources or less and runs on the same amount of different systems.
Please have a better look at why projects are there.
They write it because they want it and enjoy it. Not to provide other people with what they consider “the best desktop”.
Sorry if i sound a bit harsh, i just get a bit fed up about people who consider all software to be competition. In a way that is true, but there are also people who simply like to write the software _they_ want.

Do you have a link of this video of Rasterman’s linux au discussion?

Nope .. it aint about eternal development of E17.
Only mark in ‘one more updated suftware’ list.
But looks like its time to check out enlightenment again.
according to this screenshot 0.16.9x is already out??

This screenshot shows a beta version of the 0.17 series. Looking at it my first bet would be that E is using the old odd/even release numbers to indicate stable/unstable… but I may be completely wrong here.
Is that they just can’t seem to lock down the SVN version of E17 and produce a finalized product. Its nice that they’re still supporting and working on E16, but really E17 has been in development as long as the Gnome 2.x series has existed. They should have had a release by now.
I do understand the gripes of E17 being in development for quite sometime with no official release but I have to say the current SVN build is very stable and beautiful.
I have E17 set up with a debian ‘etch’ minimal install on a 7-year old PowerMacG4 733MHz. And man this baby flies with E17! I’ve never had this much fun using a window manager before. It hands down beats KDE and GNOME (performance wise) in a hardware such as this.
The whole E17 environment seems to have an Apple like feel to it. Each and every part of the system is beautifully designed and well thought out.
Overall, it breathes new life into this PowerMac and I’m one happy camper. I encourage all to give this a try.

As a mac user, im a bit disappointed with the slightly dated looks of the KDE interface. I know you can change most of its appearance but, well, it looks kinda “Windows 2000”-ish. Everytime I see screenshots of enlightenment I think “that is how my linux box shoulod look” (the complete oposite of what i think when I see Gnome). I realy would like the KDE environment to look like enlightenment, that would make med use linux just a little more often.
Maybe I should give it a go again, after all it is saturday.
Enlightenment… or is there one already and i’m too much of a n00b to use google…
