“The recently released 1.0.106 version of Libferris includes initial support for mounting Web photo services as a filesystem. This means that sites such as 23hq.com and flickr.com can be seen as filesystems, which allows users to upload digital pictures easily by using the cp(1) or ferriscp(1) tool with a destination of 23hq://username/upload.”
now theres KDE ioslaves, gnome-vfs, FUSE, libferris and probably a bunch of others – all of which overlap in functionality to some extent.
Is there any plan to unify this stuff into a freedesktop standard or similar?
Dont forget Zipper FS http://okmij.org/ftp/Computation/Continuations.html#zipper-fs
A new VFS would be great. Some whishes.
0. Don’t confuse user interface with system API. A VFS is the latter.
1. Orthogonal persistance.
2. Garbage collected.
3. Strongly typed. With a rich type system.
I think a term for this is Semantic File System, but I’m not sure.
Don’t forget gvfs too. Libferris has been around for 5+ years, so its not really a ‘now’ there is.
There was an initiative on freedesktop to unify VFS things, though FUSE might be the best unifier short term. You can access libferris through FUSE if you like.
I have already such an API running on Infonoanet
