Sun Microsystems announced today that it is acquiring the assets of SavaJe Technologies and will reveal further details at its JavaOne conference next month. SavaJe’s claim to fame is its Java-based embedded operating system, which was shown running in a mobile phone at JavaOne last May.
The bottom of the article says “the transaction is immaterial to [Sun’s] earnings per share.”
SavaJe has been having financial troubles for months ( http://www.eweek.com/article2/0%2C1895%2C2032659%2C00.a… )
Sounds like Sun picked up a handful of IP and staff for a bargain basement price!
Not a bad buy it would seem.
There is already a phone coming to market with this OS (Jasper S20 – http://www.gspda.com/product_1.htm)!!!
If Sun does the right thing with making this a truly open standards based platform for mobile phones this could usurp the seat held by the Access Linux Platform. I can imagine that networks would be happy to get behind Sun on this one, the handset manufacturers may reluctantly follow.
A truly open mobile phone platform is something I think could drive some true innovation in both applications and interface, rather than useless apps.. like calendars, and argh.. grids for menu navigation. Yuk.
Fingers crossed Sun makes this a reality.
Only IP, IIRC.
Savaje closed its doors a few months ago and the staff has long since dispersed. All Sun’s getting is a Java Phone OS that doesn’t have a whole lot of air time.
GSPDA might be the only winner in this, if Sun picks up the support contract. Poor GSPDA. This is the same phone that they originally claimed they were going to ship running PalmSource’s ill-fated Cobalt OS.
Really.
Are you aware of some sort of press release which provides more details on the transaction?

http://presszoom.com/story_129308.html
which says: Sun will acquire SavaJe’s intellectual property assets.
Notice that it says IP assets and not staff.
Cool, thanks for that.
If only Sun would buy the BREW technology and put it out of its misery so we can have phones with Java instead.
BREW is not why there are so few cell phones with Java.
