The AROS team has published a new status update with a list of improvements. Another important step in AROS customization has been done. Darius Brewka and Georg Steger have added a new decor system to Wanderer, allowing user to edit and change themes. Damir Sijakovic’s ICE theme has been used as an example and it is now the default theme for AROS nightly builds. In addition, a USB keyboard driver has been committed, among other things.
Finally theme support in AROS. Looks like I have to fetch code and build again – just to check it out until harddisk installation is reasonably safe.
We are just waiting for the holy grail of seamless 68k emulation now and there will be no need for OS4. 🙂
Could someone explain just what does the filemanager Wanderer has to do with decorating the window managers property, or has AROS got drunk lately O_o !?

Wanderer is the whole desktop, not just a filemanager.
Really ? then AROS never stops to surprise me it seems, is there any end to this ever more integration between components that are are SUPPOSED to just be layers upon the next lower one ?? x_o
Again, should there not be a real window manger instead of its functionality to be spread between Intuition, Wanderer, Zune and god knows what … ?
I’m sorry but I see (terrible) Linux influences in this OS, what happened to the simplicity everybody like to talk about ? rationality anyone ?
WTF are you on about?
Wanderer==Workbench.
No different to AmigaOS in 1994 or AmigaOS4 in 2007.
Then Wanderer=Workbench=WeirdDesign (sort of)
What has that to do with what I typed !!?? Is there any reason that devs avoid developing a real WM for the default high level GUI framework that ITSELF takes care of what it is SUPPOSED to take care of ?!

Could it be that what you want to say is why does wanderer (clearly not a GUI toolkit) draw its own scrollbars? That is at least the most obvious thing to me.
The basic design should be (many of you already know this), inside out:
1. Window server (takes care of drawing, windows, blah, blah)
2. GUI toolkit (base for all controls, and a standard set of controls)
3. Wanderer
The best thing really would be to “fix” this and at the same time bring Zune (time for a new name change?) some upgraded looks. Maybe a unified theming system for GUI Toolkit and window decorations?
Don’t take it as too much criticism, AROS is in a stage where any work must be seen as a good thing:)
That’s more or less how it does work in AROS. The status update is misleading. Theme support has been added to the intuition library (effectively AROS’s window manager), not to Wanderer.
Ah, wops, that does make sense. The “problem” then really is that Zune (the MUI clone) is separated from intuition.library. It would be really nice to see a marriage between the two with a common theming engine.
It is almost tempting to try it myself
Exactly as you typed John, thats pretty much how things should work.
And that how it is working.

Since when was Linux available in 1984?
Eh?

Firstly, did the 1984 OS support docoration ?
Secondly, many of the devs that have worked or work on AROS do not use OS4 but Linux, doesnt this decoration handling remind one of Linux ?
Exactly, you are a very smart dude, take care
No, it reminds me of MorphOS.
I know.
no matter in which site an amiga news item is posted. The comments always amount to someone argueing with some other guy. Heck, why can’t we all be happy that AROS got a new feature and thats all.
Because only the *NIX methods are correct. Anything else is stupid.
Apparently.
Personally I am not very interested in Theming, USB support (mice and keyboards) however is a great step forward IMHO.
Can’t wait to play around with the latest nightly build.
Thanks for the article Thom, which reminds me, I should pay more attention to this interesting project!
I know some people may not like AROS, but I personally love it, and wish it the best for the future. This is great news, with the installer bounty now been taken we can finally start to see AROS entering a usable state for the Joe Public.
so how about a torrent link
