The Syllable team has released Syllabe 0.6.3. This release includes a ‘cleaner, fresher looking desktop’, USB cd-rom drivers, gigabit ethernet drivers, improved media support, initial printing support via CUPS, automatic GRUB installation, as well as many other new drivers and bug fixes.
…is VERY quick, I can only imagine how quick it is on real hw!! Congrats
If only it would run on real hardware – at least modern hardware. I’m hoping it starts getting a little more stable.
What are you talking about man? Before this version I did run it on real hardware and as soon as we figure out this ATA(PI) driver bug I will again! Most Syllable developers use their native hardware and not some virtual machine!

It runs on modern hardware. I have it running on my Athlon 64 X2 4200+ desktop with a Radeon X1600. The SMP mode isn’t compatible with my machine and I’m stuck using the VESA video driver until someone updates the open source Radeon driver to support the X16K, but it works.
It doesn’t work on all machines and SATA is still a problem on some motherboards, but it will definately run on modern hardware.
If Syllable doesn’t work on your hardware, please raise a bug or attach your details to the relevant existing bug. That’s the only way these sorts of bugs will get solved.
it’s very good OS!
But what about PPPoE support?
There has been a PPPoE package available for download for a while. It may not be quite stable yet.
I like to try it someday.
Nice to see “little ” operating systems growing next to big ones like Windows and Linux…
you can try it today, download the vmware image from sourceforge an then download the free vmware player from the vmware website
I would like to do it,
but I got a PowerPC mac, and vmware does not run on it.
But you’re right. There are serveral methods to virtualize it. But when I will try it, I want to try it as full installation, to see if my hardware works and so on…
I don’t like vmplayer – is there a virtualbox image for this?
Syllable does not work on VirtualBox (Or rather, VirtualBox does not work with Syllable). I havn’t had a chance to try it on VirtualBox for Linux & capture the log to report it as a bug to the VirtualBox developers.
It works on wmware without problems and it feels the progress with any new version. Great job. I will try to install it to the hard drive someday (it was unsuccessful with previous versions on my main computer).
I had an Syllable 0.6.2 VMWare image with working network, so I had to reimport the settings from there to get this one to work.
Go to Preferences, Network.
For Host: type “default” (without the quotes)
For Domain: “domain” (same here, no quotes)
Click the MODIFY button, right next to (eth0(Enabled))
And enable in the new MENU the DHCP
Posting from a native install … Seems to work ok … needs more apps though.
