CRUX is a lightweight, i686-optimized Linux distribution targeted at experienced Linux users. The highlight in this release is the transition to GCC 3.2. Further this release includes Linux 2.4.19, XFree86 4.2.1, OpenSSH 3.4, Sendmail 8.12.6, Perl 5.8, pkgutils 5.0, WindowMaker (no Gnome or KDE) etc. See the change log and go to CRUX’s download section to download the ISO image (180 MB).
Looks like interesting distro. Unfortunately none of their ftp sites support “resume” download(Probably our proxy blocks that).
Has anybody tried that ?
I’ve been using Crux for a long while now and I can honestly say that I think its the best linux distribution out there. I will not state why I like this distro, but instead refer to the general crux describtion:
CRUX is a lightweight, i686-optimized Linux distribution targeted at experienced Linux users. The primary focus of this distribution is “keep it simple”, which is reflected in a simple tar.gz-based package system, BSD-style initscripts, and a relatively small collection of trimmed packages. The secondary focus is utilization of new Linux features and recent tools and libraries. CRUX also has a ports system which makes it easy to install and upgrade applications.
Try it out – you might like it :o)

Why does anyone include sendmail? I know there are almost as many books on configuring it as there are remote exploits, but why not use qmail or some other (more secure) mail transporter?
I don’t even understand the need to install an MTA in any distribution by default. How many people these days use a local SMTP server to store & forward their own email, rather than directly connecting to their remote server?
I should assume (There I go, making assumptions again…) that if you’re the sort of person who understands what a mail transfer agent is, and why you want one, then you’re perfectly capable of installing it yourself
The i586 optimized ISO to appear.
I know I’m only dreaming but I would just totally die if I could get a K6 optimized version of my favorite distro (Silence thy Gentoo users!).
When you install CRUX, you have full control over what packages from the CD are installed, just like most distributions. If you don’t want to install sendmail, simply deselect that package.
I personally don’t use sendmail, so I don’t install it. The nice thing about CRUX is that it comes with just a ‘base’ system, then you can add what you need. Its much preferable to me than taking something like Redhat or Mandrake or SuSE and going through their massive package lists removing what I don’t want. Its all a personal preference, really.
As a note, there is an excellent ‘unofficial’ ports selection available at http://crux.lugs.ch that contains a lot of extras (like KDE) if you want it.
SMF
i dont like how it doesn’t have check for package dependencies though.
I really like crux it’s very straight forward and clean, I tried to download the ports collection, but only got the base and opt dir’s, am I right in thinking this is a tempoaray probelm until the contribs are updated to 9.4? If not care to shed some light on the subject?:)
thanks
Will
Yes, contrib ports have not yet been updated. Here is a snip from the Changelog:
– “Contrib” ports have not yet been updated in cvs to work nicely with 0.9.4 (so don’t be surprised if you don’t get any contrib ports when doing ports -u). We’re working on in, but it might take a couple of days before things are in order again. Please be patient.
