Originally Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 was slated for late December release, but after a few delays, they have announced the impending release of YDL 5.0 for Power Macs. YDL v5.0 has been available for the Sony PlayStation 3 since November, but here is the Mac delivery schedule: install and source ISOs available for download via YDL.net Enhanced accounts at the end of February 2007. Two weeks later, DVDs will ship from the Terra Soft Store. Two weeks after that, you can download install and source ISOs via the public mirrors.
A linux distro, that has historically been made available only for PPC-based systems, has had their newest version solely ported to a GD game console for this many months?!
I guess the demand to run YDL on a PS3 is bigger than the demand to install it on a full-fledged Mac. Sad.
Ummm….the Sony PS3 is a PPC based system. It runs on the Cell.
And yes, the demand for Linux on the PS3 will likely outgrow the demand for running Linux on old Macs, especially considering OS X still runs fine on many outdated Macs (I still run it on my old 400 MHz G4).
YDL sucks on macs, there are better options, like just running the real thing (fedora core) instead of the always late fedora clone YDL.
I have tried running a number of distros on my Macs, both old world and new world, and sadly Fedora is not as good as Yellow Dog Linux. Fedora may be bleeding edge rather than YDL’s cutting edge Linux, but it is always more stable and feature filled for the Mac users. Likewise I fould YDL 4,1 to be better than Ubuntu 6.10 for PPC. Terra Soft has been building PPC Linux for longer than any of the Johnny-come-latlies that have just started making a PPC Linux in the last few years and it definitely shows!
Well when Sony is behind (funding?) your distro of Linux, and helping create a SuperCLuster of PS3s running said distro, you probably make it for them first, and then make it for the PPC Macs later on.
For a top contender among the greatest distros of all time.
For the PPC-run computers it definitely is.
I have been waiting for this release for a long time, I have a G5 computer, running YDL 5.0 with X11R7.0 would be fun (graphics acceleration).
i used to use yellowdog on my macs, but ubuntu has stepped far ahead. even if ubuntu will not officially support powerpc in the future, i think it will likely still be better in practice
