The next alpha release of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (Herd 2) is out. The Kubuntu announcement is here. “The Feisty Fawn Herd 2 is the second alpha release of Ubuntu 7.04, and with this new alpha release comes a whole host of excellent new features. The feature list for 7.04 has been slowly growing more exact since Feisty opened late last month.” Update: Screenshots for Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

Still not digging the emphasis on brown tones, but I’ve got to admit it’s looking better than the early days
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/67369
I hope this bug gets fixed before the official realease.
Not only this. There’s also this annoying bug in Edgy which makes your box stayin’ alive forever. It can’t power down your machine. Really annoying.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/4…
I know, I know it’s on a 2.6.15 kernel but 2.6.17 has the same problems. Nothing changed for me.
The problem is that Xorg 7.3 (coming out in the summer?) is supposed to fix a lot of multi-monitor, plug and play, and autodetecting issues, so I think they’re hesitant about duplicating efforts..
re: screenshots..I agree it looks very nice these days.

especially the claim that system upgrades will be seamless.
I really hope they will rethink their current stance on the konqueror system:/ and media:/ stuff, though. One thing I simply cannot stand is being treated like a fool. Certainly it makes sense that the average user might not *need* some of the features KDE offers, but IMO purposely dumbing down the interface just to suit the lowest common denominator is a very slippery slope to climb.
Still, it cannot be denied that they are doing some very good and valuable work.
Does anybody know if the issue with ASUS M2V motherboards has been fixed. I have been unable to get the integrated NIC (Attansic L1 Gigabit) to work on 6.10 and Fedora Core 6.
Kubuntu’s KDE interface is still ugly, sadly. I wonder when it will be possible to have a typical KDE application as beautiful, crisp and a pleasure to look at by default as shown here.

I am meant to understand that the above graphic would not be possible without some form of Microsoft input! I hope I am wrong.
Try a different style or kwin theme. –> http://www.kde-look.org
Looking good out of the box really isn’t (k)Ubuntu’s strength…

Am I meant to understand what you wanted to say here?
I agree, the KDE version’s look and feel leaves to be desired. It looks washed out. Why not sticking to blue also, or why not using dark brown like original Ubuntu color theme?
well, i like the purple, tough the default Ubuntu theme is beautiful as well. i can understand why they try to modify the default look, tough – all distro’s look so the same.
btw about the parent’s screenshot, that’s pretty much the default look, but with ugly, non-anti-aliased fonts, right?
I don’t think your example looks beautiful and crisp, but it’s rather easy to make fonts look like that in KDE. Open KDE controll center select Appearance & Themes -> Fonts and uncheck the Use anti-aliasing for fonts box.
Personally I prefer smooth aliased fonts, the opposite looks so windows 3.1 🙂
Bit cluttered, but the fonts look OK.
Are you sure you’re viewing it 1/1, and not “fit to window”, the Firefox default. That makes any font rendering look awful on screenshots!
I don’t think that’s pretty at all. It’s like the designer[s] had OCD and stuffed as much on screen as possible. They need to learn from XCode or VS about decent interfaces.
The claims that either Ubuntu Gnome or Kubuntu KDE are ugly start to wear thin when one realizes that it takes all of 5 minutes and a drop of imagination to manipulate your desktop to your liking. Ubuntu doesn’t have to be brown, and Kubuntu doesn’t have to be clunky and ugly.
So in light of this — and I’ve never done this before — I’m posting some screenshots of my Kubuntu setup on Edgy Eft. It’s not busy, it’s easy to look at for a long time without strain (for me, anyway), and I’ve had good comments from friends in the past. And once you get a setup that you like on KDE, it’s easy enough to save it as a theme, and you can even upload it to kde-look.org. If you don’t like them, that’s your prerogative, but the point is KDE doesn’t have to be ugly and you can easily alter it to your tastes.
So, the screenshots:

I like the brown color theme, but I prefered the early releases color theme (Warty Warthog, Hoary Edgehog) I prefer darker brown.
They’re still available in the theme manager as ‘human legacy’ (or maybe ‘legacy human’, I forget)
I didn’t see any mention in Herd 1 or 2 about integrated “bling manager” or anything about Compiz/Beryl… is Fiesty not going to include any of the 3D desktop stuff out of the gates?

I’m currently running Beryl on my Kubuntu box and half of the time, Beryl fail to start. I know this has something to do with the last update I did for Beryl, but still, this can’t be tolerated for a production system. I’m too lazy to fix it and as this is only bling bling my system is still usable. Also as ATI drivers still don’t propose the needed GL_Extension, the use of XGL or AIGLX is stil needed. This is not a sexy option.
Still, all I can do is hope this will soon happen, so Linux will be as sexy as Vista.
Thanks for the reply werfu… this was my experience as well. Can’t tell if Compiz/Beryl will every collaborate of if we can thank the community for two more competing (forking) technologies to fight over as we move forward.
I do like the fact that if it’s unstable, it’s not going into the mainstream distrobution. That would do a lot more harm than good.
Beryl works seamlessly for me on Edgy with no configuration necessary other than installing from repo. Of course I have Intel video drivers (on a laptop), which apparently play much more nicely with XGL than ATI.
I’m runnng Dapper Drake and have been doing so now since it was released , i have also been upgrading since Hoary Hedgehog and right now I feel no need to upgreade anymore. I can do all things that I need to do and I am happy.
That’s a good place to be….
Well, I say different strokes for different folks! If you make Gnome look like KDE, why not just use KDE? I actually prefer the look of Gnome over KDE.
Aside from the visuals, there is a lot of functional work still in progress. Until Feisty is officially released, it’s hard to say what might change between now and then.
Whoever thought up the “brown is ubuntu africa” needs a new job. Look to the professional OSX/Vista operating systems to see how eye candy is done.
And then the people bitch when Ubuntu try to differentiate their look. When they look like OS-X or Windows they bitch cause it’s copying.
Give us a break.
I have Feisty 64 on my home system and it runs very well. Compiz works a treat, I have kept the desktop background but I have changed the default theme. Easy to do if you want.
Stable, runs apps well, WINE works well as does cedega (Utorrent/Red Orchestra just in case you’re wondering). Quake 4 has no issues but I recommend turning Compiz off at this stage to run it well as the latest Nvidia driver has a problem recognising the compiz turn off when a full screen OpenGL app has launched.
There are some app bugs but that is what the alpha is about, squashing them and you don’t have to be part of it if you don’t want just run Edgy. Still, overall Feisty is a marked improvement for me as a Desktop 64bit OS over Edgy and Vista.
The last time you couldn’t exit the mount point configuration screen.
That basically means the installation process WAS NEVER TESTED AT ALL!
Way to go, Mark…
The first thing I see on the list of changes is:
they changed the password dialog box asterisks to solid dots.
Wow! I’m impressed.
Then they decided to remove a bunch of standard KDE utilities because Amarok and K3B duplicate the functions.
Hey! The command line duplicates EVERYTHING! How about removing the desktop altogether?!
I mean, if you follow the logic that less choice is better…
What I see here are a bunch of people making random decisions with no real usability logic behind most of them.
In other words – just like Windows…
This makes me fear for the future of Linux.

« In other words – just like Windows… »
You can try another distro if you don’t like (k)Ubuntu !
If you don’t like Windows.. then what ?
I hung and gave a weird graphical freeze when I chose my city and clicking “next” during the install with herd 1. Hopefully they fixed it.
Did the same (herd 2) on my test box as well… 🙁
I happen to like the brown theme — so there!
My only hope, and this isn’t Ubuntu only, is that they get better support for 64 bit versions of the applications, drivers, media players, and utilities.
Overall, I like the direction it’s headed.
Gnome-mount sounds like a good addition, especially if it handles encrypted partitions well–I hope they add pam_mount integration, allowing auto opening of an encrypted partition on login.
What would also be nice is an option to create an encrypted home partition on installation (or even after!) using ds-crypt, with Ubuntu making all the necessary changes to pam_mount.
