The Windows XP Service Pack 1 is now available from the Microsoft servers. This official SP is based on ‘build 1106’ and it weighs 133 MB. Some users have noticed a snappier interface along with the bug fixes, new drivers and features included. The official announcement is expected on Monday. Update: OSNews reader James, sent us a screenshot with the error message you get when trying to install SP1 on a pirated WindowsXP copy.
Completely false. I run Redhat 7.3, updated the distro last night, including upgrades etc, 105MB, however, it I were to be anal about the situation, I could cut it down so that I only have the bare minimum security updates.
so how does one make the service pack work when the invalid cd key message appears???
I look at the people fighting and bitching on here about how my PC is better than your PC or my OS kick’s you OSes ass. I mean damn, take it down a not why don’t some of you. This is supposed to be informative and such. So why fight or complain about this and that and next thing (all of which are pretty irrevelant). I will leave you with this.
FIGHTING ON THE INTERNET IS LIKE RUNNING IN THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS…EVEN IF YOU DO WIN YOU’RE STILL RETARTED….

Marcelo: The third is the end of the “trial version” of Windows XP Professional …
There isn’t any trial version of XP. There is warez versions of it.
It is obvious that M$ released that corporate pirated licenses to the people have chance to eXPeriment Windows XP and become addicted, like drug trafficants do.
No, they release the Corporate Edition for those who are doing mass installs. These people don’t have time for the WPA. Some of these people are irresposible, they upload it on some P2P site, and viola, the whole world has it.
You aren’t making any sense here.
Now it is time to eXPeriment a real O.S. and freedom of choice, like linux or any opensource O.S.
I very much have freedom of choice here. And I use Windows at the moment. Why? The same reason why many still don’t want to use Linux: they are more productive on Windows.
Now it is time to eXPeriment a real O.S. and freedom of choice, like linux or any opensource O.S.
Brazil is a nice place. But if you manage to buy a processor from even VIA, you can afford to buy Windows OEM along with your machine.
Pirated users use this lame excuse to get free upgrades when most of the time they don’t actually NEED the upgrade.
We can buy a gray PC that is cheaper than a single copy of M$ Office !
Then don’t buy Office. Most of the people that pirated Office don’t actually NEED Office to put food on the table or study. Openoffice.org is available on Windows BTW.
Besides, since you are complaining about MS’s “tax”, can you tell me one rival of Office that *makes money* selling their altenative much cheaper than Office?
null_pointer_us: For no good reason, some of my installed programs got the Opera icon…go figure.
Haha, I thought I was the only one having this problem.
CattBeMac: Yeah I could imagine comparing to Mac OS X 10.0, which was SLOW (and maybe even 10.1 depending what machine you’re running). At least you tell it like it is!
I was comparing 1.1GHz PIII running Windows XP Pro with Dual 1.0GHz running OS X 10.1.x (I forgot what revision it was). I’m planning to compare my laptop with a DP PowerMac running 10.2 today or tommorrow.
So I then posted my original comment here, in the hopes that someone intelligent would respond, and gosh, give an answer to a question that contains content other than bickering and childish behaviour.
You didn’t tell you situation. Am I suppose to be a a mind reader?
Plus, i didn’t bash you. I said the link is up there. Nothing more, nothing less. It isn’t on the FTP (otherwise an FTP address would be posted). It was the same thing when SP3 for Win2k came out.
Marcelo: Lunatic ? I ?! Lunatics are people that like M$ and its behaviour !
Lunatics are like you. Lunatics can’t accept a different opinions. Lunatics are those who must have holy jihads against Windows because “they kill Be”. Lunatics are people that refuse to rationalize.
I’m a Linux user, i rather use Linux than Windows. Right now I can’t, in a couple of days or more, I would. Yet I don’t bitch about how Microosft is so “evil” and why we must all abandon “M$”.
Yet no one does the same when a topic about $un or Macinto$h or $GI comes up.
don: so how does one make the service pack work when the invalid cd key message appears???
Fork over $200-300 bucks and buy a copy
If you have an SB Live, that is. If you have the latest drivers from Creative installed, then run the SP upgrade, it will completely screw your live install. It overwrites it with M$’s latest reference set, and will not let the normal install program or even their own upgrade drivers wizard restore the drivers. Now I know for most people the reference set is fine, but it is slow, has no EAX support and none of the tools (like the soundfont manager) work with it. I do a lot of pro-grade midi stuff, and having soundfont support is MANDATORY for me (since I spend a good deal of time in Cakewalk Pro Aud 9).
To re-install the live’s drivers after SP1 (or the creative update listed in Windows update):
delete the card in device manager (both the live device and gameport)
re-boot in safe mode
Check card has not re-installed. Sometimes it re-installs in Safe mode, sometimes it doesn’t (according to M$ it shouldn’t, but I’ve seen it happen. Go fig). If it’s listed delete it again.
now, as per creative site, you have to perform a ‘clean sweep’. Delete the following files (in safe mode with driver not installed, it should delete, which creative says it wont). To make sure the delete takes hold, disable recycle bin. You’ll probably want to (shudder) disable restore points on each disk as well.
/windows/system32
a3d.dll
ctwdm16.dll (creative lists it, not on my box and should not be present in 2000/XP)
ctwdm32.dll
devcon32.dll
devldr16.dll (again, another legacy dll that should not be there)
devldr32.dll
sblfx.dll
sfman32.dll
/windows/system32/drivers
2gmgsmt.sf2
ctlface.sys
emu10k1x.sys (or any simular file. Mine was emu10k1m.sys)
sfman.sys
Now, find the /windows/system32/dllcache directory, and empty it too. Then, unpack their LiveDrvPack.exe manually with winzip, winrar or a similar tool (it opens right up) to it’s own directory. In the /audio/drivers
directory is the file CTZAPXX.EXE. Run it. It’s going to ask for several files, just browse /windows/system32 and /windows/system32/drivers until you find each one and hit retry.
Now re-boot when it asks. You’d think you’d be done at this point, but about 80% of the time, if you look at the driver versions (under device manager) you’ll see some that still say M$. The following files should report these versions:
a3d.dll 80.0.0.3
ctbasicw.dat unknown
ctdaught.dat unknown
ctdlang.dat unknown
ctstatic.dat unknown
default.ecw unknown
ctaud2k.sys 5.12.01.0244-1.31.0040
ctoss2k.sys 5.12.01.0243-1.31.0030
ha10kx2k.sys 5.12.01.242-1.31.0020
live.bmp unknown
sblive.ico unknown
sfman32.dll 5.12.01.0130-1.00.0000
If these are not reporting the above versions, choose update driver, I will select, have disk and point it at the directory /audio/drivers/win2K_XP where you unpacked the .exe. After the re-boot it should take.
Mind you, on the first box I did this on (my own workstation) sfman.dll just would NOT take until I manually overwrote the versions in /windows/system32 and put a copy in /windows/system32/dllcache. Near as I can tell windows just flat out refuses to acknowledge you want to use creatives version of the file, constantly re-creating it from the .CAB’s. (another option is to hide all the CAB files and delete the windows update directories, but that can lead to bigger problems).
Great part is, Creative claims there is no problem (kind of like the first year of ACPI conflict / northbridge crackle), and M$ claims it’s creative’s fault.
You just saved me a massive headache. I used my work connection to download SP1 for home… where I use an SBLive, SoundFonts and such with Sonar (along with an Echo Audio Mona). I would have been SO pissed to reboot without the Creative tools enabled or present.
Oh yeah, why would you expect Creative or MS to take responsibility for anything? No one takes responsibility for software. Look at the EULA on anything… if this ever changes I’ll probably be too old to appreciate it.
Cheers for the tip!!
Since I installed SP1, my hibernate feature is screwed on my presario 2800 notebook. When I return from standby, I get a BSOD (first time I’ve seen it on XP). Windows then restarts and reports an error, asking me to delete recovery information.
Sorry, I meant when I return from hibernate.
Anyone notice that after getting the “invalid key,” error message on a non-legite copy of XP and nice little process called waudit.exe shows up in your processes list?? Is this a reporting program that lets Microsoft know you have a pirated copy?
The first thing I noticed after installing the update was that my Links toolbar in IE was re-arranged into alphabetical order. Totally annoying to have to change it back.
UI feels the same to me.
The UI is the same. The UI just feels more snappy.
That’s what I’m sayin’ – the UI feels exactly the same to me… no more or less responsive than it was before the install.
