Linux on XBox made quite a progress lately, but now, Jeremy Penner of Astra Network has managed to get QNX 6.2 to boot on his Sega Dreamcast. It only took Jeremy a couple days to get it booting 6.2. Read about it at QNXZone.

COOOL… kudos to Jeremy. QNX is really an awesome OS… ihihihihiks…
NetBSD, Linux and now QNX. Hm. Looks like finally the $100 computer was found. Hope somebody makes a Dreamcast clone soon.

I’ve used QNX. It looks nice and it’s user friendly but last time I used it, in Photon, I couldn’t find an option to create icons on the desktop. I don’t know about now and what their Desktop strategy is.

I mainly use QNX RtP for the AmigaXL emulator which currently offers a far more advanced desktop enduser experience on my Desktop PC and Laptop than solely QNX RtP alone.

For QNX RtP 6.2 screenshots take a look at Eugenia’s world preview:

P.S. QNX Neutrino is an amazingly advanced kernel.

Desktop Icons are overated. I much prefer the QNX dexktop to say the windows desktop it isn’t filled with all the file I’ve been working on.
Now I want to run QNX on my Dreamcast
IMO desktop icon systems are still very useful, next to offering an appealing user environment you can use icons for drag and drop functionalities. However I do agree that on an OS like AmigaOS you can also use plain text labels without the use of icons and drop the label “into” another programs without problems.
The development of advanced Drag and Drop functionalities has been one of the main innovations within the Amiga market during the early 90s.
For me personally icons systems are mainly comfortable options for digging through directories and offering the advantage that you can easily hide certain icons which are unrelevant or undesirable for the average user to make alterations. But I also agree that for the average user application launchers like Tools menus, Docks and even Startbars are more comfortable. However for advanced file managing I still prefer Directory Opus.
A functional icon system assigns different icons for different file types. This makes it good for quickly spotting the differences between files. Say, your Quark XPress style sheets from your TIFFs for the front page newspaper logo which might have a similar name.
The_Owl-stylesheet.qxl looks like a little QuarkXPress icon.
The_Owl-graphic.tiff looks like a picture (or a Photoshop icon).

Consoles are just embedded systems with loadable software (usually embedded systems have the software on ROM or something so it doesn’t change, ever… the devices are usually more specialized).
And you’d never see QNX running on an XBox… oh no, their x86 support has always been terrible, right? 😉

Yes on AmigaOS icons can even include alot more information through the use of Tooltypes (specify parameters used by programs and which can be edited via the icon tab of icon information). This included things like start application priority (in WBStart drawer), window size/position settings, opening seperate screens with its own color depth and resolution or any other useful option the programmer can think of.
if you think icons are the spawn of the devil, then don’t use them. it’s people like that who keep OS’s from becoming friendly, trying to stop even a simple desktop feature.
