In the first Ulteo NewsLetter, Gael Duval says that the first .iso of an installable Ulteo live CD will be released on December 5th or 6th. “For this first alpha release, be prepared to dive a bit inside the system to understand the potential of Ulteo. On the desktop you will find only a few differences with what you can use or see when compared to a graphical environment on other distro’s. Maybe then you will understand what makes Ulteo different, and you will start to think about the next steps of development.”

I’ve been following this project for quite some time now, and I’m kinda fed up of that phrase. Why don’t just say exactly what makes it different? Don’t want to disclose something that may benefit the competence? Then don’t talk about it at all.
Just my two cents. This guy really knows how to piss people off 😛
man you hit the nail on the head… Besides, I have to wonder what this distribution will do that will be different from what we’ve seen before… Oh well. I hope to find out by tomorrow
I sort of agree with the sentiment of the first two posts. I would like to know what makes it different and worth considering … the website is very low on information. If they want to get developers and built a community around the project they should be a little bit more forthcoming with information. However it is Gael Duval, the founder of Mandrake and so it should be interresting what he has come up with, after all he was the first one to really push the Linux Desktop market and make a usre friendly Distribution. My guess, it will be some sort of revamp of Mandrake.
Gael Duval was there at the start when mandrake was new good and different. BUT he was also there as they merged then lost their way.
I REALLY hope he learnt his lessons and not to repeat them!
Well, one interesting tidbit, according to Distrowatch, it is based on .deb instead of .rpm, which is the real reason I moved away from Mandrake. No, I don’t mean this as a flame war, I probably should have just shied away from cooker, or maybe my skills are just better with .deb, but every time I’d run a rpm based distribution, I’d end up breaking it badly some how (the rpmdb would become corrupted and none of the fixes online would work!)
I’ve had the debian database corrupted once as well, but was easily able to fix it.
That is interresting. Personally i also prefer .deb, even though i am using opensuse at the moment and i am very happy with it. It will be interresting what the difference to Ubuntu will be, i.e what it is that would make me want to choose Ulteo over and above a distro like Ubuntu. Is it mainly Gnome based then or does it have also KDE?
I seem to recall an article in LXF a little while back saying it would initially be based on KDE.
Maybe then you will understand what makes Ulteo different, and you will start to think about the next steps of development.
Maybe *then* you appreciate Ulteo while Ulteo cry manfully behind curtain. Ulteo have feelings, too.
I can’t wait till tomorrow!
I wonder what kind of GNU/Linux distro will be Ulteo?
I don’t like mysteries of this kind.
Did I see a tabbed virtaual screen switcher bar at the top? I can’t tell anything by that one, crooked screenshot.
Has anyone downloaded and tried this yet? What’s so cool about it?
