AnandTech has reviewed ATI’s latest mobile graphics solution. According to the reviewer this small and energy efficient chip is the new king when it comes to mobile graphic chips for notebooks. Also John Carmack is apparently very positive about the chip and also stated that Doom 3 will be able to run smoothly with this new Radeon chip.
John Carmack has endorsed the Athlon XP 58000+=$ saying that DOOM 3 will be albe to run very smoothly on it. He rejected comments about effecent programming.
LOL. Carmack’s games have been one of the least resource hungry for its graphics. That is, compared with it’s closest competitors.
An article on OSNEWS by Mike Bouma, not about AMiOS4 ? HMmmm………..
I am getting tired of the same anonymous trolling over and over again. It is NO *secret* that due to having a full time job as a Physical Therapist I mainly focus on topics (mainly relating to AmigaOS4, AmigaDE and classics) I actually like to write about. What’s wrong with that?
Why not mod down the comment?
IMO there is no need for that. Only if the posting uses unacceptable abusive language, would contain confidential information or someone is posting under someone elses name/nickname the posting should be deleted.

Unreal had better gfx and was faster than quake3, just like Unreal 2 will be a lot better than doom3.
Also from a technical point of view, i think the new 3dlab’s cards are light years ahead of anything from ati.

Two Points: Whether UT has better graphics is debatable. UT is more colorful, but Q3’s curved surfaces are *much* nicer. And from what I’ve seen of Unreal 2003, its not as good as Doom III.
As for the 3dlabs cards, its again not so clear cut. They’ve got some functionality ATI doesn’t, such as the pack/unpack programmable units and whatnot, but they’ve also got an integer pixel pipeline, while ATI’s is fully floating point. And overall, its slower.
1 – There’s an option for curved sufaces in unreal.
2 – Doom III is opengl only, unlike unreal2 wich can use any gfx api, and as you know directx is (for games) a more complete and faster api, wich suport’s every new feature included in recent card, although opengl 2.0 could change this, its sill far away (unfortunately for 3dlbs).
also, check the unreal 2 website for screenshots and tell me they don’t look better than doom3

3 – As for the 3dlabs pipeline, read this

it was a joke guys – calm down. I like the AMi stories…

or just look at the pic which mentions floating point processors all over the place. However the shading processors are integer so the quality my be lower.
Floating point will make one hell of a difference:

That said by the time anyone actually decides to take advantage of the floating point technologies is likely to be a long time yet, from the same article:
To the end user, the lack of full DX9 support may be a turnoff for many but keep in mind that the DX8 support the early adopters of the GeForce3 bought hasn’t really been useful, even today.
By the way has anyone tried out the nvidia detonator4 drivers, in nvidia’s site they claim detonator4 drivers deliver + 25% performance, there’s also a desktop rotation utility for flatscreen monitor’s
which of these contendors provides better support for non Windows os?
I would say that ATI their best to support alternative OSes. ATI always supported MacOS excellently and they are actually actively helping alternative OS providers like Hyperion/Amiga Inc by sending them freely their hardware, documentation and offering other kinds of development support for 3rd parties to create their own solutions.
Regarding WindowsXP there have been relatively bad performing drivers in the past, why this was the case is unknown to me.
“also, check the unreal 2 website for screenshots and tell me they don’t look better than doom3”
They don’t look better than Doom3. Ok, but seriously. It looks like Unreal 2 is really good at doing outside envirenments, which I hear is not Doom3’s strongest point. The monsters in Doom3 look way better though. And I doubt Unreal 2 does real-time lightning.
“There’s an option for curved sufaces in unreal. “
No there isn’t. Sure, Unreal can pack a bunch of polygons together into something that looks like a curved surface. In Quake III however, you can truly define a curved surface, and it will look smooth no matter how close you get, unlike Unreal.
But in the end all that really matters in a game is gameplay. Nothing beats Prince of Persia 1, despite it’s aged 2D graphics.
Did I type “real-time lightNing”?
Was of course suppose to be “real-time lighting”, without the N.
God, four years of bilingual education and an IB certificate, and I still don’t know the difference..
The Radeon 9000 Mobility or whatever they’ve called it makes the pathetic little Rage Mobility-P in my laptop cry.

The Radeon 9000 Mobility or whatever they’ve called it makes the pathetic little Rage Mobility-P in my laptop cry.
Well, I got myself a nice new (and rather expensive) Radeon VIVO last year. I always thought it was a really good graphics card – until I found out the Radeon 9700 is in the order of 100 times faster!
Than again I did have a S3 virge (4MB) before that…
I would say that ATI their best to support alternative OSes.
I would say otherwise, unless you are the head of FSF. Does ATI have drivers for Linux in the first place? no. Amiga/EyeTech could get NVidia to cough out the documentation of GeForce to them, allowing them to design drivers. They would do this as long you sign restrictive NDAs preventing things like open source drivers etc.
Just having documentation lying around for altenative OS isn’t enough, cause in that case, there are many 3D cards company around that does the very same thing :-).
As of now, while Radeons look extremely tempting, until drivers come out, NVidia remains my only choice :-P.
IMO there is no need to open source their drivers. However I believe normally graphic card manufacturers should never have to worry about alternative OSes supporting their products. More support for their products will likely result into more sales. As there aren’t much extra development costs involved for them, they should actively support alternative OS developments. This at least when there aren’t anti-competitive agreements with dominant players.
Based on the information I received from various developers over the years, I personally believe ATI and Matrox are relatively easy to deal with regard to this.
NVidia is relatively easy with this, as long you can assure them that you wouldn’t leak any of the information out, you would keep the drivers closed etc., they don’t mind (after all, more sales). Having Linux drivers for their products in the first place shows that Nvidia isn’t controled by Microsoft.
In fact, Microsoft is quite angry at them because of the XBOX thingy, and if rumours are true, the XBOX2 would use ATI cards….
ATI and Matrox is nice because they already have sufficient information needed to program drivers, but Nvidia from the beginning shunned this idea, thinking their IP could be stolen…. (may have some legitimacy, I remember once when there were pirated Intel processors…. literary)
Radeon 9000 already has BeOS drivers that work. Not sure why Linux drivers aren’t ready yet? http://www.bebits.com/app/2938
And they thought BeOS was dead, not with people like Thomas Kurschel still working on it.

Sorry there aces, but UT’s graphics did not hold a CANDLE to Q3, it shows how little you understand graphics OR art.
And another thing, unreal2 is going to get its ASS kicked by doom3, technically and artwork, except there will always be idiots stupid enough to even suggest that ID’s engines are not always 1st in the industry… loser n00bs.
Oh, well im sure you will fall for gimmicks, like multiplayer and choosing your own skin. WOW… go play pong.
Dont you even realize that multiplayer is just a fad but the true spirit of PC gaming has always been the ability to enter another world completely on your own? Im sick and tired of you freaks who only play multiplayer games (and you vulture modders who should be making your OWN engines if your so smart) whining about doom3 not being multiplayer right away. Its bad enough that the single player experience (which is what us REAL gamers do) will be marred cause you asses got ID worrying about multiplayer. If you knew ANYTHING about doom, you should know its a SINGLE player game, and thats the intent and you should be kissing their asses and LOVING it.
Multiplayer and Modding are two viruses in the pc game industry as far as im concerned. Faker gamers cant play games without these elements…
It could be a mysterious journey through a neverending unique each level, awesomenes… and if you couldent pick what your hero looks like… they wont play it. Fuuuuuck yooooou. You kill us all. You phonies
Multiplayer allows 5% the amount of content in a decent single player game to be turned into a repetitive multiplayer game where you do the same thing over and over … maybe if there was a decent story-based multiplayer game, it also allows people to cheat others out of victory for kicks.
Modding keeps talent occupied rehashing the same ideas over and over again instead of making new games… (allowing the industry to rape us with 100 expansion packs for 3 years after a decent game comes out, instead of starting a new one)
You people arent even worthy of playing doom3, it is WASTED on you.
