Microsoft has further delayed the release of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, moving expected availability from the second half of 2007 to the first half of 2008. The change came silently in an update to the company’s service pack roadmap. Although that date is still listed as ‘preliminary’ a similar delay for Windows Server 2003 SP2 seems to be finalized. Initially planned for the end of this year and currently in beta testing, SP2 will now arrive in the first quarter of 2007.
As long as Microsoft strives to ship security fixes ASAP, I’ll be satisfied. I can wait till 2007Q1 for Win2K3 SP2.
you don’t have to keep up to date more than 300 pcs, do you?
i want SP3 NOW.
Edited 2006-10-20 13:12
No, lucky me
But look at it this way – it means you have a high level of job security
I didn’t know a SP3 was even in the works. Anyone know what all its supposed to add to xp?
“with SP3 arriving three years later, the update will focus security patches and bug fixes rather than feature enhancements”
I thought Windows XP SP-3 was finally shipping this coming November? They’re calling it Vista, or something like that, and charging from $199.00 to $300.00 for it.
The horse is dead, please stop flogging it; I know you’re part of the ‘anti-Microsoft-no-matter-what-they-do’ crew please allow the adults in the forum appreciate being able to run an operating system and having access to such ‘useless’ (by Linux fanboy definition) of such things are Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and being able to use hardware without stuffing around with bits and pieces of the OS.

Now, kaiwai, please stop your trolling. You are no better than NotParker, and that’s terrible.
You ought to know better. I’m disappointed in you.
Now, kaiwai, please stop your trolling. You are no better than NotParker, and that’s terrible.
So you think his post is a troll and you respond with a search-and-replaced version of it. What, precisely, does that make your post? I’ll give you a hint, it rhymes with “droll.”
I usually hold you in high regard due to bedoper.com, but if you keep attacking me like that, I won’t for sure.
kaiwai was way out of line, and I mimicked him to show how much out of line he was.
How hard is that to cope?

“attacking” you? You may want to grow a thicker skin, or discard the persecution complex, if you plan to keep participating in this whole “internet” thing.
kaiwai was way out of line, and I mimicked him to show how much out of line he was.
Out of line? Because he pointed out the lack of originality in one of the trite one-liners that gets repeated every single time there’s a Vista thread here? Riiiiight.
How hard is that to cope?
Uh… what is that sentence supposed to mean?
Saying that wouldn’t be original if you would have immitated one of the thousands telling that joke before but it even has been told in this very thread before.
Please, if you insist on beeing a troll and flaming around, at least try to say something yourself instead of just over and over repeating others.
And this comes from an linux user.
//And this comes from an linux user.//
Obviously, considering your grammar.
English is not my native language, but i guess someone as educated as you doesn’t even know that other languages exist.
English is not my native language,
That is such a tired excuse. I freely admit to not being fluent in French or German or Gaelic or whatever, but I still have the sense to actually realize that I’m not capable of expressing myself in those languages – along with enough sense not to try to participate in forums that where those languages are dominant.
I thought XPSP3 was supposed to be out in January. They were calling it Longhorn or Vista or something like that and it has a fancy skin. Did I miss something?
ha! I was going to say that then refrained from it
Perhaps this will help people in their decision to upgrade to Vista sooner? In the meantime, slipstreaming updates works fine for me.
Why? What pressing issues with Xp is SP3 supposed to solve?
Your avarage Joe User never even heard of SP3.
Average Joe doesn’t even grok firewalls or antivirus. What Average Joe haven’t heard of is pretty much irrelevant.
And that is exactly the point. Pushing back XP-SP3 to a later release isn’t going to affect mass market choices, because mass market doesn’t know the first thing about it.
This Wait or delay in SP3 is just anpother ploy in hope lots of WindowsXP users will go straight to Vista,
Why switch to Apple? I’d gain nothing from doing that. The tactics of Apple are no better than those of Microsoft.
They may have been too busy with Vista and Office 2003 to have focused on WinXP SP3, I see no ploy here, just a really messed up development schedule for Vista and Office. Not everything MS does is a conspiracy
For some reason, I’m suddenly reminded of an old quote on the fallacy of assuming conspiracy when incompetence is a much more plausible explanation.
yes sp2 for ws2003 is the only one i want.
i am using a very tiny windows server 2003 customized for desktop, and it it by far the best OS i ever used
tinywindows2003 (RAM memory usage on first install = 55Mb )

Based on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, this specially made version
of Windows has been fully tweaked and transformed for home use/playing games.
This operating system will run almost all of the software that runs on Windows XP.

enjoy the hint, i dont understand why microsoft does not sell a version like this one, instead a the bloated XP.
I have to admit I seriously doubt the legality of TinyWindows2003. To me it appears to be most illegal.
Thom, you might want to take a closer look at it.
I am sure that iso’s aren’t illegal, and you still need a valid windows license. Burning and copying windows cd’s is common practice in the IT business. You don’t pay for the cd, you pay for the cd key.
Considering the contents of the “release info”, I’m not sure it could be considered legal. Definitely not in Denmark. Distribution is usually a right reserved by the copyright holder, unless the license specifically allows you to distribute the product.
However, distributing patches to turn a normal Windows 2003 Server into a TineWindows2003 would be legal. But not otherwise.
And a automatic Product Key Changer doesn’t seem that legal to me.
“I am sure that iso’s aren’t illegal, and you still need a valid windows license.”
Sorry but you’re completely wrong. That is warez, that’s not legal. Making isos of commercial products available for download most certainly is illegal, not to mention that the readme file on that page says “No ‘Product Key’ is needed”. It’s a hacked up VLK version from the sounds of it. Also if you go up a directory that site is full of warez and cracks. I am surprised that OSNews would allow links to illegal software to remain on this board.

I agree with you. It has a very illegal warez-like taste.
Especially that automatic Product Key changer… sounds most illegal to me.
i put my key (that i never used), i paid full price for it.
I think it’s been made with Bart PE builder:P
Will tinywindows boot from a CD, like knoppix?
oh yeah, 2008 – windows xp is over 7 years old xD
Did du you Work with DOS in 2000, that woulb be nearly the same thing.
The fact XP is from 2001 doesn’t really matter since it’s been upgraded constantly since then.
The differences between XP and Win2K are so small it could have been released as a SP to Win2K.
Using old releases are a non-issue as long as you apply the proper security fixes and bugfixes.
Someplaces WERE still running win3.11 machines in 2000, it’s crazy but true, which would be the equvalent, and lots of places are still running Windows 2000, which came out 7 years ago, and there are still places running NT, and that came out in 1996 (10 years ago), so your statement makes no sense. I also ran into quite a few customers who ran Windows 98 when I worked for an ISP, and I just left there 2 months ago. People run what they need to run, and what they are comfortable with.
Windows 2000 is great. It’s NT, it doesn’t have the Internet Exploiter engine as tightly integrated (meaning it’s easier to remove) and best of all it’s very lightweight, especially as compared to XP. The only reason I don’t still use it is due to Microsoft’s decision to not add cleartype to it in the none-existing Service Pack 5. Otherwise I could live without many of XP’s “features” and stick with what works best….

It’s a true story, and that’s why people don’t upgrade, they find what they like, and stick with it. I certainly won’t be going to vista for a very long time, if ever, but I am not Vista’s target market, either.
Humm, cant find TinyWindows2003 anywhere…
I have my doubts that we’ll ever see SP3. Anyone remember what happened to Windows NT 4.0 SP7 and Windows 2000 SP5?
XP SP3 being delayed until 2008 isn’t a good sign…
Ok, now that Vista has almost gone RTM, all these hordes of developers are going to be doing what? Not working on XP SP3 and W2K3S SP2? Mebbe Vista SP1??
