The new release of Syllable includes many updates on the code, drivers, API and widgets. The OS is now more “desktop-oriented”. A copy of the announcement can be found here.

Can’t wait to download this. You guys are doing a fantastic job of taking what was an ignored work in progress, and actually progressing it! I’m hoping the IDE drivers make it into 0.4.2 though.
Keep up the great work, and keep the updates coming!
Well I like the new look, but this Crytal icon theme really makes me wanna puke, I would rather include gnome2 or even better: BeOs style maybe OSX as well, something different, that is. Is there a big difference between OpenBeOs and Sylable? Is it based on linux kernel or what; how hard is it to install it?
>Is there a big difference between OpenBeOs and Sylable?
Except the fact that AtheOS/Syllable/OBeOS folks are usually round and round the same people, because of the similarities of the architecture and the C++ multithreaded API, Syllable and BeOS do not share any code or have any other similarity.
>Is it based on linux kernel or what;
No. Syllable is based on AtheOS. It is a POSIX-compliant OS, but it is _not_ a Unix (even WindowsNT/2k/XP is Posix compliant, but that does not make Windows a Unix).
It has nothing to do with Linux.
> how hard is it to install it?
Pretty hard if you are a newbie. Easier if you have experience with stuff… But it is certainly not an “dead easy” installation. And it requires a FAT partition, in order to put the installation files and then install on its own AtheOSFS partition.

Is there a big difference between OpenBeOs and Sylable?
Please refrain from being idiotic, you obviously aren’t involved with the OpenBeOS project anymore than a lump of coal. Syllable has something to show for their work, OpenBeOS is really not in a GUI-stage yet; toting only moderate changes to their kernel, which is based on NewOS.
Not trolling, despite my name. I have other, better places to troll; but I actually like to make real comments to OSnews.
Has anyone tried the new version if Syllable yet and perhaps have some screens other than the ones at the Syllable homepage?
I dont think anyone can expect alot of user features right now when there is so much else thats needed for developers. ide driver isnt a must have or else type thing right now. tools that would allow useful software to be written is much more important. It is annoying to install without cdrom support, but its not too annoying.
Heh, still one of the most simple installations, if not the most simple Ive ever done. but I already had a second partition availible. download file, run boot disks, 5 commands, reboot 3 commands, reboot done.
Its visually the same except for 3 icons. some .4z screens at users.rcn.com/evan.taylor
The screens you got there are pretty old (almost a month old). They were done before the additions Rick put to the desktop, like cleaning up the icons, and before he added the desktop context menu etc.
Yeah eug, I was considering taking new ones, but I really didnt like the new art at all.
Come on guys!!! What do you want from me??? I worked hard on this version of the desktop and the alerts and filerequesters, so what more can I do!!! Please don’t think I am being snippy, but I just want you to all to know that I am doing my dammest to make the desktop great!!! I know that I will not please everyone, but if you don’t like the artwork, help me on it!!!
BTW: For anyone whom are having problems with the desktop displaying black in stead of regular icons, please eamil me at rc0565#helicon.net. JTLYAK: My email for cup.edu is not working at the moment, so please email me at the above address.
BTW: Band and Choir camp are officially over, so now I can work on the desktop more!!!
Rick Caudill
wasnt aware art was your thing, but honestly I liked the old login better, only minus the atheos triangle sphere picture (as it would be ontop of some fonts)
The icons aren’t suppose to be the highlight. It is the cleanup and the context menus. I doubt Rick had that much time redoing the icons from stracth. Besides, as for using GNOME icons…. I bet there would be people complaining about it too. Rick likes Crystal, let him use that until someone gets around making a icon theme *for* SLB.
I barely noticed a change in the icons really, they matched each other. It was the login screen, which was the only change besides context menus that I noticed. And I asked that the context menus be done similarly to how they are now. If you read the lists, alot of the ideas about the desktop people want need new things to be added and changed, so asking for desktop changes at this stage is like asking for a porshe in 10 years, you might get it, might not, you may not even want it by then as something better will have come along.
I have to agree, I’m impressed with the packaging too. I’m impressed that anything even works!
To be honest, building something as large as Syllable from scratch is a nightmare. It takes too long, it is far too manual, and there are so many places where it can all go horribly wrong and where I have to keep stopping, fixing and re-starting. In all honesty, I had an early night last night, and I’m still exhausted because of it! The only thing keeping me awake is caffeine and loud music, at the moment…
Anyway, I’m going to look for an alternative to the current “one big build” system I’m working with at the moment, for future releases. If only to keep me sane
He Syllable devs, i would ask eugena 4 tips and or design views about your GUI! I thought that here remarks about linux-desktops is right on target!
eugenia seems to be level headed about gui design, if she isnt busy, seeing her influence the desktop of syllable would be very interesting at the least.
anyway not to force you eug, but you could be very helpful.
I have already contacted Rick about it, days ago already.
I just hope he takes on my suggestions. 😉
Well, Eugenia has already made suggestions on my apps for Syllable and most of the changes are taken on board.
All help is appreciated, especially from people who actually *know* what they are doing!!
Hey, it’s a really impressive effort. But I don’t really understand the thing with fixing GUI issues now. Isn’t there a lot of things that needs fixing in the core?
Well, I shouldn’t be whining, since I don’t really use or in any other way contribute to syllable.
