Considering how many industry giants have partnered with Microsoft in WMA and PlaysForSure it would appear that Microsoft is a leader in successful consumer electronics technology. That’s not the case. All of these partners hooked up with Microsoft simply because they had no idea of what to do on their own. Few even experimented with their own independent technology plans; they simply picked Microsoft because the company seemed like a safe bet at delivering technology. They obviously didn’t do their homework. The big secret they missed is that Microsoft hasn’t ever earned significant profits in the consumer hardware business, nor has its executives proven any business acumen in delivering what consumers want in hardware or creative entertainment, excluding, of course, Microsoft’s impressive and highly sophisticated keyboard and mouse division.
Anyway, Apple succeeded.
People will still call everything an iPod.

heh,
reminds me of people that call any PDA a “palm”
Or even worse: newspapers printing ‘ipods and mp3-players’ *shudder*
that’s why they can’t get outside the Windows Box.
MS doesn’t have a flavour or any company style. They make the best tools. But they can’t generate excitement nor lust nor anything else. They can’t seem to hype their own stuff. Most people don’t know that MovieMaker comes with XP. Go look at Apple’s site. They show their toys.
MS is like Linux. It’s bound to geekdom. And everybody knows that too much of something is bad.
I disagree.
If MS is run by geeks, then by Sales- and marketing geeks. They do not (by far) make “the best tools” whatsoever, but they DO know who and how to persuade to get their stuff sold. As an example, very few sysadmins I know would voluntarily put MS products on their servers. They do because they’re told to by their managers who get fed bullshit by MS’ sales machine who tries to convince them that they wouldn’t be “compatible” or “up to date” if Windows/Exchange/SQL server/whatever wouldn’t run on their system. “Get the fact”-FUD campaign, anyone?
But the whole thing is still run by Geeks. How many CEOs would do a Matrix skit at their conferences? TabletPC (star trek fans)? I don’t think there is a corporation that has that much geek in it than MS.
MS’ stuff is great. You should learn to use their software instead of just brushing them to the side like that because of your negative emotional investment in MS.
PS: Don’t be a hater. Repent.
ronaldst: But the whole thing is still run by Geeks.

I thought MS is run by barbarians under the fearsome leader Bill Gates? I might be wrong on the fearsome part, though.
EDIT: grammar, for pete’s sake.

IMHO Google must have more despite having less people overall.

If MS stuff was so great, you shouldn’t have to learn their software so hard.
Up until today, I’m still aggravated with MS products at work (namely Outlook today, Windows zealots at work blaming me for an Outlook bug that recreate a directory and the options I deleted, at each Windows reboot).
I’ve known Windows before knowing Linux, and yet, I manage to have far less problems and have way more efficient and reliable products under Linux, all better than any MS product I ever used.
And I’m really annoyed by all the people like you that blame others because they can’t blame products from the god MS.
MS is run by geeks
It is?
that’s why they can’t get outside the Windows Box.
Windows is about the ungeekiest thing I can think of besides towels.
MS doesn’t have a flavour or any company style.
Well, that’s true.
They make the best tools.
Cough!
They can’t seem to hype their own stuff.
Excuse me? Everytime you switch on a tv, read a tech/business headline, use a computer, MicrosoftMicrosoftMicrosoft. With MS products, hype is just about all you do get.
MS is like Linux. It’s bound to geekdom.
That’s the oddest statement I ever heard. “MS is not like Linux” is probably the only thing MS and I would agree on.
Windows is about the ungeekiest thing I can think of besides towels.
Towels, which as any self-respecting geek would tell you, are pretty useful things to take with you if you intend to hike your way across the galaxy.
OTOH, you don’t need windows for that.
Hate to break it to you: it’s because ur a MS hater.
And yes, I forgive you. I was an MS hater once myself.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t good reasons for hating MS. There are.
Yep.
There are good reasons for hating everything.
Myself, I prefer to judge products individually and not based on the company.
The quality (ahem) of its products is one of the reasons I hate the company. A product like Windows should have been buried, not ubiquitous.
But they do have good products. Again, judge indivdually. What’s so hard about that?
oh, ok they have failed in most their post 2003 projects. Vista might be an success. but it will be one of their first in a long while, and my guess is that zune will flop extremly in the eu. I dont know about the american market but its just my educated guess that it will there too just as the wma flopped big time.
I don’t think consumer hardware failure by MS is a secret in any sense, its even published in quarterly financial filings
Its been apparent for some time that beyond mice and keyboards (financially speaking) MS has made no money from consumer hardware products.
I consider the xbox a success at least from a usability standpoint and quality standpoint. It may not have made any money for MS but its a solid product.
Zune and PlaysForSh*t are a failure and bound to fail further.
For me, it’s the Ameri-centric slant. Microsoft don’t cater for European diveristy (and uniqueness) enough.
I swear by their mice though, even as a Mac user. I wouldn’t use anything other than an MS Intellimouse, or an Apple wireless.
I suggest to you the Logitech MX500. It is the best of it’s stablemates, I suspect within a week or two of use, you’d agree with me – even if it’s not wireless!
I liked the article. The man made very much sense. To me,that is.
That is probably the “on-trackest” article I ever read!
If Microsoft made nothing but mice and keyboards, I’d consider them a reputable corporation. To bad they can’t promote the heads of *that* department!
