Last week we announced Mandriva’s brand new distribution, and now Mandriva Linux 2007 is finally available to the public. The key new feature of Mandriva Linux 2007 is the AIGLX and Xgl 3D-accelerated desktop. Mandriva is the only distribution which offers both AIGL as well as Xgl out of the box; it will decide by itself which of the two is preferred for your setup.
Looks good! Can’t wait to upgrade.
Enjoy 6 months of anti-virus protection with Kaspersky
This is curious. Unless you are running a server serving up email to Windows PCs, who cares about viruses?

Maybe they are. And don’t think Mandriva isn’t used on servers. I mean, for the last god-knows-how-long we’ve been hearing how “Linux isn’t ready for the desktop”. It seems I’ve been running Linux on the desktop for longer than that particular meme has been around.
After all, not even Mandriva’s developers seem to think it’s not ready! [I attempted to find a source for this statement but it seems it may have been my imagination. Can’t find one by googling.]

I think his point was just that when you use it as a desktop it doesn’t need much by way of anti-virus, so why include that in the desktop edition.
I honestly don’t know what your point is with the rest of the comment.
In which case the point should be made that Mandriva, like most Linux distributors, provides software on its media that can be used either in servers, or on desktops.
The Mandriva guys has said that they can more easily sell their OS when it has antivirus protection; it comforts people, and they expect it.
It was in one of the comments here on OSN. Let me find it… Found:

OK, that makes sense. It’s sad, but it makes sense.
The DVD comes with the next issue of Linux Mag which may be easier for some than downloading. Nice magazine too.

published Oct 6. No connection by the way, not even a subscriber at the moment.
Oh, now I understand: Linux Mag has the DVD on the cover. At first it sounded like “Mandriva’s DVD includes the next issue of Linux Mag”!
The link should point to issue 72.

I’ve been taking a look at the latest RC’s and those were so good that they got me into the club … so: downloading final 2007 =D
EDITED: I forgot to type a word XD

Amazing! I am downloading a distro that will be released only in the next year!
If Mandriva will release only one release per year, why not make thing easy to users by calling them by the number of the year of the release?
Yeah! Car manufacturers too.
Think about it…
this will be the current version for three months of 2006 (October, November, December) and nine months of 2007 (January through September). It makes more sense to call it 2007…
plus people would feel a bit dumb downloading MDV 2006 in 2007. I always feel a bit sorry for the poor people running Windows Server 2003…:P
Adam,
Installed and running with 2.6.17.13-mm-desktop-3. Mandriva have done a great job on this Adam. You can really see the fit and finish from Lycoris, the stability of Connectiva and the bleeding edge (for now) of Mandrake coming through on this release. This truly incorporates the strengths of the 3 distros in its bloodline. Great job!
Cheers.
Matt
“Marketing”.
I like the concept behind Mandriva 2007. When I tried cooker a few days ago, I noted:
None of my firewire drives showed up on the desktop. HAL sees them but something is not working. This is a big problem, and I am amazed this does not work perfectly.
3D acceleration does not work on my ATI 9600 card despite installing the proprietary PLF package. Similar problem to Vincent D I guess, except I have a notebook.
Gaim segfaults on startup.
Do I really want to sepend hours and hours trying to figure out what is wrong? Not really. It’s a pity.
If gaim segfaults on startup either there’s something broken in your /home directory or your system’s flaky. I’ve not seen a single other person report that problem all the way through the development process…
someone else had a problem with firewire disks; it turned out they had /etc/fstab lines for them from some previous attempt at mounting them statically. If you have /etc/fstab lines for the drives, take ’em out.
we don’t have anything to do with PLF, we can’t support their packages. 3D should work on a 9600 with the free ATI driver, actually, try that.
I wanna see what all the hype is about.
I got yer video right here:
http://corp.mandriva.com/webteam/2006/08/21/say-hello-to-3d/
The real thing is much smoother – the jerkiness is in the video, not on the system.
I’m not really on board with the way the borders of Windows move when you maximize them and such, but the way the whole screen turns is pretty cool. I dunno if that exists in OSX or Vista, but I’ve never seen that before
what’s the difference between powerpack and powerpack+?
Does powerpack+ also have cedega and lindvd?
Yeah, + has Cedega and LinDVD. The main difference between PP and PP+ is that a lot of server packages are on PP+ that aren’t on PP (of course, you can always get them from an FTP mirror).
The bundled services are different, too – PP+ gets more.
I only wish they would give more info about what’s included. As in the title “powerpack+” which suggests a superset of “powerpack”.I think i will switch from SuSE to mandriva this time after the 10.1 debacle.
What’s the real difference between discovery and powerpack a part of marketing segmentation?
Different package selections (Discovery doesn’t have any development stuff on the images, for e.g.), different theme (yeah, not a big deal, I know), Discovery uses the simplified menus by default, Discovery DVD has a live mode. Nothing huge. Oh, and Discovery’s cheaper. =)
PowerPack comes bundled with more extensive support.
Discovery is a “no frills, very cheap” packaged Mandriva box.
Choice is good.
Peacce!
Someone can find any informations about where can I find md5sums of the .iso images that can be downloaded via torrent?
A good question is also why the PowerPack for x86_64 differs so much the i586 version. Unless I’ve misunderstand it all it is pretty much unusable for those that don’t know how to manually download all files needed to install the drakconf and rpmdrake packages. I’ve posted about it here: http://forum.club.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=53974
I.e. not including drakconf, which is the configuration utility, in the main distribution makes it practically impossible for normal users to even configure it. On top of that, not including rpmdrake either, which is the main utility for getting updates and new packages, makes it equally hard to even _get_ the drakconf after installation.
That’s not intentional, and I didn’t hear any other reports; sounds like something odd happened with your installation. Could you file a bug on the ‘Installation’ product, with 2007 as the distro version? The installer guys will probably ask for some files like /root/drak/report.bug.gz .
Odd with my installation?
Was I wrong then: is the rpmdrake and drakconf package included in the four cd’s that make up the PowerPack for x86_64?
At installation time, the installer asked what disc I had available, with all six discs being pre-checked. I of course checked out disc 5 and 6 since I don’t have access to these (them being only available with PowerPack+).
Yes, I would very much like to report a bug. However, there are obstacles. Since there are no apparent direct link on the club to a page where I could report a bug I of course searched the club wiki for “bug report”, something which returned a whole slew of interesting links, for example http://club.mandriva.com/xwiki/bin/view/Main/BugzillaIsNowTheOnlyWa… .
However, all and every page on the wiki now leads to the “special page” with the title “Mandriva Linux 2007: a quantum leap” (with the url http://club.mandriva.com/xwiki/bin/view/Downloads/ ). Without exception.
Now, I’m no marketing or technical expert, so I can’t fully explain the added value of effectively disabling _the whole wiki_ on the same week that the new product is released, but I am sure there is one, right?
Perhaps you could post the link to where I can report bugs?
