Sun Microsystems has upgraded its low-end UltraSparc-based servers with faster 1.5GHz UltraSparc IIIi processors, the company said Wednesday. The move has been expected since August, when Sun said it scrapped its UltraSparc IIIi+ ‘Serrano’ processor and planned to upgrade the IIIi instead. The new chips are a notch faster than their 1.35GHz predecessors.
It’s really nice to see Sun continuing to innovate up and down its product line. I know that it has been popular to bash Sun’s decline in recent years, but keep in mind that a reinvigorated Sun will result in lower prices from both IBM and HP. This is a good thing.
The V245 looks sweet with PCI Express slots and SAS disks. The CPU speed increase isn’t that big of a deal but the ability to use faster cards is.
