Microsoft has reached Pre-RC1 with this latest release, Build 5536. The screenshots taken show some of the new features in this build. According to a quick test, Pre-RC1 is very stable and fast. “This build is Pre-RC1 as the screenshots demonstrate. 5536 is surprisingly stable and fast compared to all previous builds.”
Okay, so if it’s not a Beta and not a RC, than what is it? Gamma? Pre-RC just sounds….weird.
It’s Beta 2 SP1
“…Pre-RC1 is very stable and fast.”
It’d have to be, judging by the reaction Beta 2 got!
So far, hasn’t every thing been Pre-RC1?
Its actually RC1 but they are afraid from critisism thus they tagged it Pre-RC1. Critisism will happen immediately when testers will notice how unstable it is to be called RC.
Microsoft should take its time to finish this product correctly or its release might hurt more than its delay.

True, and why not stop the damage by simply offering ‘free upgrades to Windows Vista’ for those computers bought from the first of November to the eventual shipping date of Vista.
Then atleast you keep all the parties happy; the OEM’s are happy because people won’t hold back from purchasing knowing that they can upgrade for free; Microsoft is happy because it’ll appear nice and rosey that not only did they hold it back to ensure it was up to standards, they add some whip cream and a cherry in the form of a free upgrade.
The only people pissed off will be Apple and its fanboys.
As for me, Windows Vista is looking better each leak and screenshot given; its about time Microsoft *DID* do something, and they finally did.

Humm,

Being afraid of criticism has nothing to do with it. It’s simply an interim build. Private testers receive many interim builds between the major milestone builds that get distributed to the public.
It’s just a snapshot. Definitely better than none.
Microsoft should take their time. If the OS isn’t ready then it isn’t ready and you should have more time. Microsoft’s mistake was annoucing a release date when they werent even past the beta stage. Doing guesses in the dark like that eventually makes other components of the OS have to rush their development which only leads to features and quality being cut.
Anyone know when it will expire? Same as Beta 2?
So it appears Microsoft have actually brought a good beta release afterall. Its such a shame since MS are the big guy everytime they do something wrong you get millions of linux/mac users laughing their heads off. We forget however that Steve Jobs tries to keep his beta’s under NDA’s so most of the embrassing bits we never see and Linux beta testing is just the perks of open source software (as in ” you don’t like it? fix it”). I think we need to cut MS some slack.. sure they shot themself them in the foot time after time with release dates and perhaps next time they wont mention that until maybe rc2 or so. Also granted even though Vista is less than the original concept in feature completeness at least it looks like for the first time in 4 years Vista could possibly make it out the door… or maybe im speaking too soon?
For the next generation in OSes that most common users will be using its starting to look real good now here’s hoping they don’t drop themselves in it again.
