Terra Soft Solutions, Inc., the leading developer of integrated PowerPC Linux solutions announced today availability of Apple computers with Yellow Dog Linux pre-installed. Terra Soft, an Apple Authorized VAR, is able to provide custom configured stand-alone units or clusters while maintaining the full Apple warranty. While installation of Linux on PowerPC has greatly improved, pre-installed systems boot directly to Yellow Dog Linux, saving time with installation and configuration.
I wonder why they even bother to do that…….
Bas
The only way people will buy them is if they can afford to buy OS X.
IIRC Terra Soft owns YDL
I wonder why they even bother to do that…….
If you need to ask it’s probably not for you.
fooks
the prices are better and they include dual boot osx/ydl… 256mb ram minimum…
do macs make decent servers? anybody here ever use a mac as a server? or are they better for workstation use?
just wondering,

And we all know Terrasoft owns Yellow Dog Linux so my
question was somewhat self answering….
Bas
yes, they have a server. its called xserve ( http://www.apple.com/xserve/ ) along with marathon that uses the guys of a powermac and puts them into a server or allows you to use the powermac case and mount it to a rack( http://www.marathoncomputer.com ). They all run unix underneath and thus have the ability to be very good servers.
Here again i ask myself
I wonder why they even bother to do that…….
If you have Linux or FreeBSD who needs Windows or
Apple on a Server?
Bas
One reason would be the nice administration tools that Apple includes with their OS.
Essentially the same product, accept they configure the system to dual boot for you.
OSX, same warranty, same price + YDL
Is there a point?
Yes, from the little bit I know about YDL it would be the functional equivalent of having Red Hat and OSX on the same box. I wish we had the same options in the x86 world.
PS. remember when Be Inc. was going to offer BeOS for free to anyone that would load it on a dual boot system and MS put the smack down on all vendors that considered it?
*Jim runs*
Have you guys seen any of the admin tools from Apple? I can tell you from first hand watching a demo up close and personal, it is really slick stuff. I was actually blow away from what I saw. They make incredible nice servers and the GUI (plus unix underneath) is my wet dream for my work.
I am really considering of getting a few Xserve for my company. Sun, Linux, FreeBSD, and some NT (Nice Try) shop.
You guys ought to take a serious look at them if you get the chance.
Jim: PS. remember when Be Inc. was going to offer BeOS for free to anyone that would load it on a dual boot system and MS put the smack down on all vendors that considered it?
Well, bundling BeOS on a PC and bundling Linux on a Mac is very different.
Apple knows there is a growing niche of Linux users. Switching platform may be too intimidating for them (x86 to PPC). So, by having Linux preinstalled, they could get comfortable with their Macs before they wipe out YDL for Mac OS X or another distribution of Linux.
If I were to buy a Mac, trust me, I would go for Terra Soft’s offering.
However, Be’s plan is to get many OEMs to bundle their OS into their computer so they can have a market share increase. It is not for BeOS users to get comfortable with the platform, but rather an easy access to get ISVs and IHVs.
So, in my eyes, these two is very different indeed. Besides, Apple makes money from the hardware mostly, not the software, while Microsft makes money only from the hardware (unless there is a Microsoft keyboard and mouse..)
So whats the different ? Dualboot means the OEMs would also install Windows and so MS is loosing no money. So its the same apple still sells hardware and MS software. It would be a different when they only install BeOS. But this was not the case, they just wanted to do Dualboot.

Actually, there are quite a few that does that. Pogo Linux is my favourite because they have the most professional package. (It comes with Windows XP instead of OS X, though – LOL).

You have a point there, I would think it over. But nontheless, make no mistake, these OEM deals weren’t made to kill BeOS. These deals are practically the carbon copy of those used back then before Windows was a monopoly in order for Windows to be exclusive, rather a choice. It just stayed there when Microsoft became the monopoly of the desktop.
Anyway, Thoems, the profit from software and hardware blah blah is not the main point. The main point is the difference between BeOS’s case and current YDL case.
I was over at MacSlash and reading the posts about the Yellow Dog Linux on Macs business. LOL, it’s amazing what most of the posters say about Linux. Most seem to agree that Linux is “crap”, some think it’s useful for this or that, but not really worth bothering with, etc. When I was younger, I was a Mac zealot for many years (of course, it was somewhat different then – Mac users were fighting for survival), but, although I still use and love Macs, I’m glad I’m not single-minded anymore. Zealotry obscures your vision big time.
If Terrasoft isn’t an apple reseller than they can cut the damn macs in half with a saw a sell them. If they bought the macs they can do whatever they want with them.
Here again i ask myself

This makes about as much sense as me saying, why even bother to put linux on a desktop? If you have Apple or Windows who needs Linux or Unix?
People have their own prefences, the more choices they have to make their selection the better.

Apple obviously agreed to the plan because the warranty stayed intact.
I first it looks that way but ask youself this:
Is Mac free? Does it run on i386
Is Windows free? Does it run on Sparc?
Thank you!
